I thought I would share some sites I find useful when doing stamp research. If you collect a country other than the one you live in, Google Translate is invaluable for translating foreign web pages: translate.google.comIf you find a link and the page won't load, hop on: www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/and find out if it's a problem with you, or if the site is down for everyone. Google Image search, will let you search for an image based on another image file. So, go to the webpage where you see a stamp image you want to know more about right click and choose "Copy Image URL" or "Copy Image Link." Then go to images.google.com. Click on the little camera icon and paste in the URL. You should get similar images. When you click on an image, you'll get the option to load the page the image is from. I'll add to this, as I think of more useful links to post.

Hi www.dogpile.com/ is another great search tool. It submits your search criteria to all the other search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Yandex (new one on me) and others. Jerry B

Have you ever bookmarked a great site and subsequently discovered that it is no longer available or has changed its format and all of that great information that you used to rely on is no longer available?
The Collectors Club of Chicago site (askphil.org) is one that I used to frequent for its Washington-Franklin identifier.
In another thread on this forum, rod222 indicated that he had frequented the Club's glossary.
Neither of those philatelic resources are currently available on the Club's current website.
Fortunately, the Internet Archive's WayBackMachine lets you go back in time and visit websites as they previously existed.
Using askphil.org as an example, the Archive has 389 snapshots of the site going back to October 10, 1999. I opened one from 2007 and both the Washington-Franklin identifier and the Glossary were accessible for use.

For a thousand dollars I can become a member for life to APS. REALLY??? I don't mind a reasonable fee to use a site for research but come on its like they're trying to milk collectors to support THEMSELVES not the hobby. On this site we willingly share our common knowledge for the good of others and promote collecting.

NOT The question that must be answered is: Is it worth the $15 cost of e-membership to access the databases in hopes of finding the information that you're after?

IMHO it's all about the difference between running an organization / business vs. doing it just for fun.
An organization / business strives to make some money so that they can pay their employees, organize their healthcare, have insurances etc. stuff. I took a quick look of APS financial records (publicly available), and they spend somewhere between 250-400,000$ a year on salaries & expenses alone. So no wonder their membership fees are what they are.
Forums like this... Well, they're a labor of love of their owners/admins/maintainers. There's no pay, no insurance, no sick leaves, nothing (except some expenses and piece of good mind)... If they're having a good year, then the the admin/owners can buy a pizza slice or something (but only once a year, LOL). Seriously speaking, I do have lots of tribute and understanding to all admins/mods (not just here, but on all stamp sites) to all the 'free' work they do.
just my 5cents worth,
-k-

I won't argue the merits of joining a philatelic society/organization, other than to say that sometimes you actually do get what you pay for. With regard to Canadian machine cancels, the International Machine Cancel Society has a study group that might be able to assist without a membership commitment. The Society does have a good deal of U.S.-related cancel information available online to non-members so the Canadian study group might be open to sharing information with non-members as well. If you're interested in contacting the study group regarding your research, the website indicates that the group leader is Jim Felton (jim < at > feltoncpa < dot > org ).

Hi
I should have mentioned a while back another useful function for anyone using Google's Chrome browser.
1. Click on the 3 horizontal lines in the upper right of the browser page (latest browser version)
2. In the drop down menu click on Settings
3. On the settings page go to the bottom of the page and click on Show advanced settings...
4. Scroll down to Languages
5. Check the box Offer to translate pages that aren't in a language I read.
6. Close Settings
After this is done, every web page that is not in your language (you could set this in the Languages setting) you will get a bar asking if you want to translate this page. It works great!

Hi classicalstamps
You should change British ColOmbia to British ColUmbia. Only the country is spelled with an O after the l. (pet peeve of mine since I collect Colombia)
Also in the Spud Papers EQuador should be ECuador
Nice job on the Colombia forgeries.

Yes thanks westy, all sites I needed for info wanted a membership fee to use their site.As a collector I find that repulsive that information should be held hostage for ransom.Just me I guess but spending money is a issue right now til I pay off college loans($800 /month).Not that I mind my kids are worth it but bites my budget hard.

Jerry, Thanks for the corrections, I appreciate it. Do you have any forgeries of Colombia? If so, I would be very interested in images for my reference library

Hi classicalstamps I have a few forgeries but unfortunately I do not have a scanner. I guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and get one. For Venezuela go to the ASOFILCA site: www.asofilca.com/I have a copy of Williams Castillo's excellent Venezuela pages. You will have to ask him for permission to use the pages. His e-mail address is: eduven@gmail.com . You can also contact him through ASOFILCA. In general a lot of good information is in Spanish. If you do not speak Spanish then Google has a good translator (see my post above if you are using Google's Chrome). Jerry B

classicalstamps, Thanks for bringing your website to my attention. Looking forward to reading through all the entries, especially for the core countries I collect. Would appreciate knowing if there are other resources in print or on the web that explore the world of forgeries: France, Italy, Japan, in particular.

Marvelous stuff, that is our wider genealogy "family" (Colnect), the people who collect, tea bags, bottle tops, tram tickets....... Hooray for collecting. I recall a celebrated Philatelic Journalist, who was attending a stamp show in Switzerland, the exhibition had printed facsimiles of the Canton stamps on the Sugar Bags, so here he is, whizzing around the tables, collecting the entire series. The collecting bug, is a curious affliction.

Would appreciate knowing if there are other resources in print or on the web that explore the world of forgeries: France, Italy, Japan, in particular. For Japan, you should get the CD from "International Society for Japanese Philately": www.isjp.org/isjp/CDROM.htmlI am writing a book on forgeries of the Old Italian States. It will be a visual catalog made for tablets and wide screen monitors. The scope is app. 300 pages. I will let you know when it's available. If you collect Old Italian States I'm guessing you will find it useful
