French Sudan was a colonial territory in the federation of French West Africa. The colony was formally called French Sudan from 1890 until 1899 and then again from 1921 until 1959, and had a variety of different names over the course of its existence. In early 1959,French Sudan(which changed its name to the Sudanese Republic) and Senegal united to become the Mali Federation. The Mali Federation gained independence from France on 20 June 1960.Senegal withdrew from the federation in August 1960,which allowed the Sudanese Republic to become the current independent Republic of Mali.
Stamps of French Sudan were superseded by those of French West Guinea. 1940 -Air- Scott # C1-C5 C1 (1.90fr same design) missing

Thanks again for yet another informative post, Bombadil! It's always interesting to read up on the back story to many postal administrations!
