The field of paintings on stamps as an very wide one.So this thread is about paintings on stamps of Asia only. Even that "Asia only" still means, that there are many hundreds,if not thousands of stamps of this thematic. All kind of paintings, drawings, woodcuttings, frescos etc. are included. I will begin with Japan.Japan alone may have several hundreds stamps with paintings. In 1948 Japan started issuing paintings on stamps for the Philatelic Week. This one shows (in unicolour) a silk-painting of Hishikawa Moronobu (1638 - 1714 or 1717) Issued Nov.29th,1948.

On Dec.3rd,1948 a souvenir sheet for the philatelic exhibitions in Kanazawa and Takooka was issued. The stamp shows the same design, now imperforated. The s.s. is un-gummed (all s.s. should be like that !). 150.000 were printed.

issued Nov.29th,1948 "Moon and Wild Geese" by Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858).The original is a multi-coloured wood cut.
This stamp again was printed in sheetlets of 5. Although 400.000 sheetlets were printed, what is not an extraordinary small number for that periode, this stamp has become the most expensive post-war commemorative stamp of Japan.

issued Nov.1st,1956 Coloured Woodcut by Toshusai Sharaku. Neither the birth-name of the artist is known, nor his lifespan.Maybe around 1770-1825. He worked less than one year in 1894/95 and produced in that short periode about 140 portraits mainly of actors.
