Those are great photos @nl1947 I myself are struggling a bit to see the difference of some I have. Yes, Tobben, I have been having the same problem. Some of mine have heavy cancellations, which also makes the task more difficult. Luckily, Xavier ( hrdoktorx ) had some of each type clearly identified and easy enough to see, that he was able to show me, and we were able to correctly identify mine, I think. But many thanks to Nelson (@falshung ) for starting this thread and for those superb photos which show off the embossed details beautifully.... wow!

To help further Beryllium Guy and others, in addition to the wonderful scans above, I can show the pictures of the embossings from my AFA catalog: The "small shield": The "large shield":

Those are great illustrations, but the problem is that my stamps has to much ink that It is hard to tell what is what. But I will do a new try with my new scanner. Unfortunately I sold my phhoto gear (including a macro lens) some years ago.

Tobben ( tobben63), I was having the same problem due to ink from the cancellations obscuring the vignette. So, I did two things: taking a cue from Nelson (@falshung) that lighting at the proper angle can help, and then flipping the stamp over and working from the reverse side (Xavier hrdoktorx also mentioned this), I was finally able to correctly identify my stamps, almost all of which were the large shield type. Hope this may help a little. In the end, once you know what to look for, thanks to Nelson's superb photos and Xavier's catalogue illustration, it is really pretty straightforward. Good luck!

Indeed, the pictures are missing. The owner of these left TSF and took all his pictures with him. Most regrettable.

Besides the shield, other ways of differencing both issues are the curve of the wings of the eagle and the crown above the eagle. One is the Prussian crown and the other is the German imperial crown. I hope this helps...

Here is the easiest way I have found to determine large shields from small shields. This can be done from the back sometimes, if the stamp has no hinge.
Look at the upper & lower sections of the inner circle.
On the Small Shields, in the upper sections of the inner circle (white area), there are no wing tips, and it is just open space. The highest wing tips are even with the lowest letters on the sides. In the lower sections of the inner circle, there are spaces along the lower edges.
On the Large Shields, in the upper sections of the inner circle, there are wing tips, and there is hardly any space along edges. You can see wing tips above the lowest letters on the sides, and almost all the way to the top. In the lower sections of the inner circle, it almost looks like the wings make a full circle. There is hardly any open space, in the white area, without wing tips or claws. The Large Shields almost look like a round circle inside the white area, with very little spaces along the edges. It is a harder to determine the difference with a heavy cancel, or if the shield imprint is off center.
I hope this helps.
Have a great day.
Mike.

Congratulations,Xavier ! The 2 Kreuzer is a beauty. Nicely centered, what is unusal on this issue and a good Constanz (Konstanz) cancel. Mine is a rather poor specimen, with a missing corner, Nevertheless it can show nicely the difference of colours between Michel-no. 8 from January 1872 and Michel-no.15 from April 1872.
Seen from the back the large shield (9 on 9 Kreuzer,Michel-no.30) on the left and the small shield (Michel-no.15) on the right.

hrdoktorx - Very nice stamps, congratulations! mikeclevenger - I missed your fine post regarding how to identify the small and large eagles until now. That's quite helpful and saved for future reference - thanks for sharing When you look at as many of these as I have int eh last year, you get pretty good at it and try to figure out the fastest way possible to determine what you have. LOL. They are extremely hard if they have heavy postmarks and a hinge still on the back. Even after soaking, sometimes you almost can't see the impression on the back of some of them. But you can almost always see those areas I have the arrows pointing to, so that is what I came up with. I just hope this helps others in their quest.
Have a great day.

Another auction win, the AFA #23 large breastplate embossed eagle German issue, 1 Kreuzer yellow-green. It is a good looking stamp. It is amazing how this stamp is about 150 years old and still looks that good. If I can only look this good at 150!
Have a great day.

Nice stamp with a nice cancellation, upside down, but still nice. At least you can read the city and the year clearly.

Since we were talking about auction strategies earlier, I just received the big win from last month, for which I pooled my budget after losing out on many over bids, the 2 kreuzer orange large breastplate embossed eagle 1872 German Empire issue:
