I have an unusual topical collection and that is horror on stamps. Horror encompasses mainly Literature (books) and Entertainment (movies). But it also fits in Art (Bosch, for example), Society (Halloween and other celebrations), and Music (Night on Bald Mountain, for example).
I started collecting this topical because of a long-standing interest in horror, and I decided to combine the two hobbies.
At first, I thought I wouldn't find many stamps, but once I started looking, I was surprised at how many there are. Some are obvious, like the recently announced Frankenstein's Monster stamps from Jersey. Others aren't as obvious, such as the Henry James stamp of a few years ago (he wrote the classic ghost story "The Turn of the Screw").
I'm working on an ATA-style checklist of horror stamps and a handbook on the topic.

No one can be on a stamp until they're dead in the U.S. How about the Harry Potter movie stamps? They showed stills of the actors.

I keep a folder of stamp images in my Pictures folder, mostly stamp images I like but also some that hit my funny bone. This is one of the latter - I have the image saved under the file name "GB comedy Dracula". For whatever reason, this one makes me laugh. I wonder if Bela Lugosi's stamp collection has been passed on, and if the new owner has a horror topical collection. ha ha Ryan

This thread is turning out to be interesting and this is why I decided to delete my post and not include "politics" into it !! René I feel the thread is still slightly political !!! But let's get scary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cover sent to myself from Wembley Exhibition Centre during 'Stamp 97', an annual event once held in London but now sadly gone. It was the best event ever for Youth and nothing ever replaced it. It was my favourite Stamp Exhibition too and I took my holidays at that time each year so I could attend. 1997 was the 'Horror' theme and there were giant Horror figures walking around and 'terrorizing' everyone all day long. It was quite amazing. The cover was on offer from the Walsall Security Printers' stand at the show and two Walsall sample stamps are affixed and 'cancelled'. Great Britain FDC of the time, hence the Horror theme. One of the stamps was shown by Ryan previously. Gloversville Halloween Cinderella. The aforementioned Exhibition (Stamp 97) ran competitions for kids including one for drawing horror pictures. The winning designs were made into souvenir miniature sheets and given away in the British Philatelic Bulletin to subscribers. USA Horror Strip !! I love all those characters as I was a Horror fan as a kid. Beauties ! Equally spooky stamps from Canada from a Se-Tenant sheet. Royal Mail (UK) produced special and limited edition folders for Halloween in 1997 featuring the stamps of Great Britain (seen on the above cover), USA, Canada (shown above) and the Ireland Miniature sheet shown in a previous post. Also included were board games, masks and other surprises. All for kids obviously !! Londonbus1

I don't have a lot of material in this topical area, but here is what I can show: a postmark from 1st October 1997 (today's date 21 years ago) advertising the "Movie Monsters" series, which Londonbus1 has already shown. I have added a similar, but different scan of the Movie Monsters stamps themselves, which shows the selvedge material from the pane as well as the stamps. The final item is an FDC from 10th October 1974 for the US "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" commemorative, which has a very good Hallowe'en look to it!

I recently found another cover, similar to the one I posted recently from 'Stamp '97' at Wembley. This one has an interesting and quite attractive (Ha Ha) Handstamp on the Two sample stamps.

My stamp club's October display at the library where we meet. This Trenton Stamp Club I am in does nothing like that. Everyone just digs into what people have brought & buys stamps. They usually have one dealer set up, but it is all just accumulations of stuff, none of which has interested me in the least. It would be nice if it all wasn't about buying someone else's unwanted crap. That is all it is. I paid dues for this year (all of $5.00!) but doubt I'll continue with them. They have a show coming up, so I'll stay until at least then...

For my stamp club's October 20 meeting, we are going to have a program about horror and Halloween on stamps.
First, we have the Frankenstein display, pictured above.
We have an exhibit frame, which will be at the meeting. One side will have Thomas Lera's exhibit Dracula -- Dead and Loving It, which was shown at the National Topical Stamp Show in 2008. The other side will be a display of more of my scary stamps.
There will be two PowerPoint presentations during the meeting. One will be an audio-video presentation, with the audio being my interview by Nancy Clark on APS Stamp Talk in 2015 on the subject of horror and Halloween on stamps, and the video will be a slide show of such stamps. The second PowerPoint will be Tom Lera's expanded Dracula exhibit, which he put together last year.
The club is the Wyoming Valley Stamp Club, located in the Wilkes-Barre, Pa., area (we have a Facebook group you can check out). Our meeting is going to be at the Hoyt Library in Kingston, Pa. If anyone is in the area, please stop by.

So, out of curiosity, does that mean that Hallowe'en is celebrated here in France as it is in North America? Here in Aix, I have seen no evidence whatsoever that anyone is planning to do anything about Hallowe'en, and it is just 3 weeks away.

Here in Aix, I have seen no evidence whatsoever that anyone is planning to do anything about Hallowe'en, and it is just 3 weeks away. It was more in fashion in the late 1990s-early 2000s (when that stamp came out). It's not such a big tradition in France. The Day of All Saints on November 1st is a bigger deal. But you do find some neighbourhoods where they organize it. We are always on the look-out for such places with our kids.

Checking out the ATA, it looks like a scam to me. Pay for membership, pay for lists... That can get quite expensive, especially when one is a foreigner in their eyes.
I'll just look in the catalogues for what I am interested in instead.

Hi brightonpete, For what it is worth, and I am biased, they are not a scam, they do a lot to promote the hobby, just through a topical lense. While some checklists can set you back a pretty penny they are pretty good to foreigners. The journal alone is worth the cost in my opinion. All the best,

On the envelope I received today, another French Halloween stamp, which I had forgotten about. Sc#3048, issued in 2004. I have it in my collection, but had never really noticed it before.

Before Halloween happens upon us, another issue from Austria from 2013 on this theme. These are 4 puzzle-piece-shaped stamps fitting together, part of a series of such kid-themed stamps Austria has been issuing at the rate of one per year.

I'd forgotten about those spooky Jack-o-lantern stamps! Wouldn't they look neat on a commercial cover, from, say Bert's Pumpkin Patch (an Atlanta area Halloween-time attraction/ritual).
If anyone would care to send me one of the above stamps, paying the domestic letter rate, on a cover posted today (10-31-18) I would be more than happy to send some stamps cataloguing twenty dollars or more from the area that you choose, or if you prefer, some postal history covers from whatever area I might have that interests you, also with a twenty dollar minimum retail value. If anyone overseas would like to send me a Halloween stamped cover postmarked today (dropped in a mailbox today would be fine) I would be happy to send you twenty dollars catalog value of stamps or covers as well.
I will check this message board often and send my mailing address if anyone takes me up on this offer.
Now if only I could figure out how to cross-post--or better yet, "quote" the preceding post above and stick this in the appropriate "offer for trade" threads....

While I was reading the latest Details from Canada Post, I came across an article about the new Red River Resistance stamp, which was issued November 6, 2019. The magazine states: “This stamp commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Red River Resistance of 1869-70, which asserted Métis rights during the turbulent events leading up to the creation of the province of Manitoba.” What caught my eye was the illustration of Fort Garry on the stamp and on the official first-day cover. Fort Garry was featured in the second set of Haunted Canada stamps, issued in 2015. In a story from 1903, a sentry of the Canadian Mounted Rifles at Lower Fort Garry in the Red River Valley reported seeing a cart with a team of oxen driven by phantoms passing by the fort at night. When he stopped the cart to challenge the driver, it disappeared into thin air. The cart returned again and again, with different sentries reporting the sighting. The favored theory was that the apparitions were expressing their displeasure at the fort encroaching on a cemetery. I never know when I will see a horror topic on a stamp.
