One of the interesting things about some of the British Colony stamps is the number of times they were reprinted and the changes that can be used to determine the relative time of the printing.
One example of this is the Bahamas 2/ Seal of the Colony issues. The initial version was issued in 1930 as part of the Tercentenary Set, and then was modified and used until the final printing in 1946. During this time, it was also overprinted and used for the 1942 Landfall set which commemorated the arrival of Columbus in the Bahamas.
Beyond the two design versions, there is a thick and thin paper version, and a number of subtle color changes that you can use to determine the printing date. If you collect these stamps, see the link to my website below for more details and illustrations of the stamps.

In my opinion, the 2/ series is the more complex, but there are similar traits found in the 3/ issues as well. You will see a thick or thin paper, color shades, and stamps used for the Landfall 1942 overprint issues.
