...with a stamp collecting focus.
I have a Canon inkjet Pixma iP1900, cartridges are roughly $25 for single black, $51 for colour. I usually keep things till they die, but I am thinking of getting another printer, ink can smudge not really convinced this machine suits my purpose.
I am thinking Laser. Anyone have experience in a decent laser machine, suggestions ? prices, personal review? pro's / cons etc etc. Are cheap bog standard Lasers OK? Passable? Prefer slimline minimalistic style machines.
Thanks.

Hi Rodney Personally I use an EPSON C88+ inkjet printer which is a great inexpensive printer. A friend uses an HP laser printer, black and white only, and it does a fantastic job. Another friend uses a Brother color laser printer and he likes it a lot. Laser color printers cost a bundle. Hi Jerry, will browse that, thanks. I thought I saw a Laser for $38 somewhere, when I was kicking tyres. I should have taken more notice.
I like Epson, they use Seiko software. Just not sure of another inkjet Inkjet and stamps somehow don't mix in my "best practice" thoughts.
Update: Found a few near home ranging from $20 to $40 Checked toner and is $45 for 1500 sheets of printing. Next trip to city, I'll try and secure one and give it a run. (Samsung Monochrome) which is OK for my stamp pages, I have never used colour to date, leave that to the stamps themselves.

Hi Rodney
If you are not using mounts I would stay clear of an inkjet if you want to make your own pages. If just normal everyday use an inkjet is a good buy and a laser printer is overkill.
I use mounts exclusively and would not think of using an inkjet for making pages. I do not trust the ink not smearing.
A hint. When you buy a new printer USB compatible would be the way to go. My C88+ has both 22 pin and USB capability (I use the USB). My friend with the HP changed computers and there was no 22 pin connector. The printer could only have 22 pin. A $20 22 pin to USB cable solved that problem.

Well, Folks, I am going out on a thin limb here, I don't like Brother items, but I am going for the Brother HL-2132 Laser printer, comes with horrifying reviews $38 brand new, with toner cartridge refill (2,600 pages) at $30.35. I'll post a review after I have used it for a few months. (If it lasts that long) Goodby Inkjet! PS : anyone also thinking of buying, just check "in the box" I don't think it comes with a printer to USB cord.

Hi Rodney
If you have to buy a cable make sure you get the right USB cable.
Just like an inkjet. I bought my inkjet for $79 and have probably bought $200 of ink. Actually $30 for a toner cartridge is not too bad. Black ink costs me almost that much (color ink is about half that of black). I like the C88+ as it has 4 cartridges, one for each color.

Right! noted Jerry. I very rarely print colour, if I do, I throw it on USB stick and print it at the Town Office, 400 metres away, 15c per sheet. I am quoting generic toner, the official toner for that machine retails $114

Hi Rodney My friend with the HP LaserJet ordered and returned cables online 2 or 3 times. After he asked me for help we went over to the computer store and bought the right cable for the printer. He never realized that the printer model made a difference, as well as the USB. So, make sure the cable is for that particular Brother printer. $114 for "real" toner and $38 for knockoff. I was wondering why the toner was so cheap. I would not use Brand X ink for an inkjet as the ink may gum up the works. For laser printing it is probably alright. Locked and loaded. Purchased today "Brother HL-2130 monochrome Laser Printer" Paid $49 ( about $10 cheaper online in some places) 700 sheets on the first toner cartridge apparently. Generic toner refill circa $35 (2,600 sheets)
Setting up : It was as easy as creating a "thin" when removing a stamp. Piece of pie, 10 minutes and I was printing.
Initial observations, looks cool, looks modern on the desk, fan could be considered noisy as the drum cools it down after a print. ( 4 minutes?) No USB to printer cord supplied, but my old inkjet was the same (A and B USB cord) must be less than 2 metres
First print, paper that came through looked a little "wriggly" as the heat distorts the paper just a tad, that disappeared as the page cooled.
CD rom auto loads and feeds the software, and it loads in a few minutes, not like the old epson inkjet, that was 10 minutes.
Overall? (so far) Pleased as Punch, with an overall feeling of "How do they ever produce such a thing for the price?" The box and packaging was worth $49 dollars alone.
Time will tell.
Negatives: Printer comes with Styrofoam packaging (advises one to keep it if you return for servicing ) !? at $49! Styrofoam goes to landfill, I would have liked to see "egg carton" type paper mache mouldings.

(All In One) as the pixel count when scanning (eg: 200dpi, 600dpi, 1200dpi, 2400dpi) really don't have too much to do with the image but it seems to have a lot more to do with printing. I'm by no means a tech expert (quite the opposite) but that's just an observation. Looking forward to seeing scans! Oh I see it's an A.I.O. you mentioned ink cartridges.

I use two different scanners. An HP Deskjet F335, She's an oldtimer but works rather well for things over 600dpi. I also have a cheap-O HP Deskjet 3050 AIO that is my primary scanner/printer/copier.

It's a dedicated laser printer only Jeff, Monochrome . Bog Standard. still have to weigh the "hand feed" option, when I need to put text on my quadrille pages.
I have an Epson Perfection scanner. Most guys seem to use/prefer this scanner.

It should suit your needs quite well, just as long as your not printing 100+ pages a week. That's where most of the negative reviews are based usually is in the printing parts.

No worries, Rod! It's a legitimate concern with some types of paper. Is quadrille paper thicker than normal? I know the dinky old mono laser I have at my desk for work starts to get persnickity about anything heavier than 24# bond.

Hi Zuzu, Paper is normal archival quality A4 paper, I print the quadrille (or graph design) on it in light grey, this is my base stock, as I like my pages to be free form, and most of my collection is hinged. I reprint the Page, overprint, with suitable text as is required. With my Romania I use mounts, as the stamps are valuable and I have made a "good husbandry" evaluation. Australian stationery store are not like the US I find them a bit like "supermarkets" they only stock fast moving lines, they can buy bulk, offer cheaply and make profit via turnover. I asked yesterday, and the store manager had to confirm from me, what indeed was a "slipcase"? All my A4 binders which were $4.95 have now been superceded with a "fast release button" and now come at $7.95 I have to live with that
