Siderunners!?! The concept 'Forerunners' was recently discussed in another thread (Link: Faroe Island forerunners) 'Siderunners' is another concept used by some, however I haven't seen any definition of the phrase. I am thinking siderunners when stamps of other nations are valid for postage concurrent with national issues. Example given stamps of Austria, Germany, France, Greece, Russia GB etc that could be used in post offices in Turkey, even tough Turkey had its national postage stamps. Slightly different examples of siderunners are Indian stamps used in Afghanistan or Nepal. I came across a few Queen Victoria stamps today with Nepal postmarks, and they are now being shipped to Norway For the Turkey siderunners, I read once that the colonial powers maintained their own postal services because the Ottoman post was simply considered unreliable. (?) I believe the explaination for 'siderunners' in Nepal and Afghanistan is that neither were members of UPU so their national stamps were not valid internationally - hence Indian stamps were needed for letters going overseas.
