We have seen some of the Juan de Fuca Despatch issues here on TSF before, but I don't think this 1989 issue has been shown yet. (I'm making the assumption that they actually belong in the Local Posts section, hopefully I got that right ....) Ryan

Ryan This post would have been better in Cinderellas : Canada (To meet up and join with other Juan de Fuca Labels) not sure if Mr. Lafreniere will spot this post. I'll spot it alright...but it may take some time. Thanks for bringing that error to my attention. The orange sheet should indeed be 38 cents denomination!

The Juan de Fuca Despatch Carrier Service operated between Victoria, British Columbia, and Port Angeles, Washington, possibly during a Canadian mail strike. I couldn't find much information on this local post.

Was this delivered or mailed to a Canadian address? Just curious. I am intrigued and need to see if there was a postal strike at this time. A fun little research project while enjoying an evening beverage on the deck.

I have found a three line paragraph that mentions a strike in 1988 from the Pacific Tribune Photograph Collection help by the Archives of Simon Fraser University.
Picketing during the national strike by the Union of Postal Communications Employees, a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. The strike began Aug. 24 over the issue of reduced hours for technicians who service postal sorting equipment.
Found another reference to this strike from
CANADA POSTAL WORKERS STRIKE Journal of Commerce Staff | Aug 24, 1988 8:00PM EDT
Canadian postal workers went on strike in selected locations across the country early Wednesday after rejecting a last-minute offer from Canada Post Corp.
Postal officials have vowed to keep mail moving, but declined to give details of their contingency plans. It is the third strike in 15 months to hit the Canadian postal system, as negotiations with some 5,800 maintenance and white-collar workers failed to reach a compromise.
Federal mediator Mac Carson said the negotiations were continuing.
Union officials say they have a strike fund of C$25 million. We could hold out for a long time, said Stephen White, president of the Union of Postal Communications Employees.

The Juan de Fuca Despatch was initiated during the 1965 postal strike but it ran until 1991. In the period between 1965 & 1990 mail strikes in Canada were numerous and sometimes lengthy. At one point the union leader was jailed for not abiding to return to work government legislation. Responding to a Canada Post request, the US postal service declared an embargo on mail to Canada in 1968 and all such mail was labelled "Return to Sender" In any event, the Juan de Fuca Despatch was organized by Ken Robertson a British Colombia stamp dealer (name appears on the letter pictured). The stamps paid for the ferry service both ways between Canada & the US. Normal postage was necessary on the items once they reached their landfall. A flight service by Robertson's partner was also initiated in the 1980's to supplement the ferry service. If one decides to collect these particular stamps, there are over 130 different varieties some of which are rare. There are other couriers that issued similar stamps - BC Private Courier & Stern Parcel Service

An article by Robert J. Frost describing the service appeared in the September 1994 edition of The Canadian Aerophilatelist; the article begins on page 8. Frost's article provides what appears to be a detailed reference regarding the Juan de Fuca Despatch service labels:
