Does anyone know anything about arranging an unofficial first day ceremony? Or is that even possible?
The firm where I work supports local first responders. I may want to propose to the firm that we arrange an unofficial first day ceremony at the local post office for the First Responders stamps coming out in September. The firm already expressed an interest in buying panes of the stamp to send to local agencies, so they may be interested in furthering honoring them in a ceremony.

I'd try to arrange something with the local post office & first responders, and find a local printer to make up the covers. Then on the day, lick & stick & cancel the covers. Maybe the post office will let you do that earlier. Talk to your local officials & get everyone to meet at the post office. It would be a lot of work, but worth it in the end. Especially when the profits from the covers could be donated to the first responders. Maybe the town would kick in a donation as well. Considering how close to the event it is, I'd get hopping right away! I tried that with an RCAF squadron, but ended up talking to a brick wall. I should think you'd have a better chance for a go. Good luck & save a cover for me. I'd buy one...

I'd suggest paying a visit to your local postmaster to discuss the possibility. Such an event can only happen if the post office will have a supply of the stamps on the day of issue. While it was recently announced that all commemorative stamps would be automatically distributed to all post offices, I don't know if the policy change has been implemented.
