What I collect: WW, postal history, cancellations and to much to have much time to spare on forums..

I am a WW general collector unfortuneately loving to collect much more different stuff of this great hobby than time allows. I guess that is a dilemma most of you know all to well. In particular I'm interested in the historic aspects the stamps represent. Love it everytime I get a better understanding of the world history by digging into the cancellations, see how the borders and political situation can be tracked by forerunners etc. Together with my brother Jon (alias Blaamand) we are underway putting up a new WW homemade collection system - hopefully finishing the set-up before retirement in approx 20 years, including postal history of all kinds, forerunner set-ups, CDS collection, BN's, maritime mail +++ for every stamp issuing ententity there is. So - this forum will for sure be a good support along the way.

What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...

Welcome brother!!! Haha, I fancy the 'unfortunately' bit. You're right tough - and I guess most WW collectors agree - sometimes the undertaking of collecting WW stamps and all sorts of postal history might appear like just a little too much. Most days, however, it simply feels like:

I am a WW general collector unfortunately loving to collect much more different stuff of this great hobby than time allows. I guess that is a dilemma most of you know all to well. In particular I'm interested in the historic aspects the stamps represent. Love it every time I get a better understanding of the world history by digging into the cancellations, see how the borders and political situation can be tracked by forerunners etc. Together with my brother Jon (alias Blaamand) we are underway putting up a new WW homemade collection system - hopefully finishing the set-up before retirement in approx 20 years, including postal history of all kinds, forerunner set-ups, CDS collection, BN's, maritime mail +++ for every stamp issuing entity there is. So - this forum will for sure be a good support along the way. Thanks for your introductory post, barbu , and welcome to TSF! I recognize that TSF is a veritable United Nations of diversity, but just let me get this straight: we recently have a new member from New Brunswick, Canada, who in theory, would be expected to be an English-speaker, but in reality, French is his "langue maternelle" (native language) -- renden . Ok, got it. Now we have a new Norwegian, brother of Jon ( blaamand ), who chooses the TSF site name barbu -- French for "bearded", just in case anyone else besides me is having trouble following all of this. OK, I will apologize in advance if I start babbling in French to the wrong guy, but based on these circumstances, I am guessing that you will understand. Thank goodness we now have the Google translation feature.... OK, just kidding, barbu and everyone else! It's late here, and that's my best excuse. Too much back and forth between French and English for me on a daily basis around here. Welcome, Barbu, I hope that beard is a dandy! I like your avatar very much, and look forward to seeing some posts from your collection. Best Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy -- clean shaven)

tomiseksj - good spot! Your suggestion is valid for my brother barbu - residing in .... Barbu, Arendal, Norway.
Chris Beryllium Guy made me laugh hard with his comments on the beard - you must be clairvoyant; Jens is often the "opposite of clean-shaven" and normally the 'beardy' one of us brightonpete - Hehe, I did not think of that....maybe that forerunner would be just the perfect car next time Jens and me are going away for a stamp auction

Thank you all for an overwhelming warm welcome folks:) Very much appreciated! Unlike my brother I am not used to Forums. I have rather prioritized time for the never ending search for nice cancellations and the “hardware” part of our hobby! Also, the little time I have spent on forums before have frustrated me, as it is often difficult to find what I am looking for. Here it seems to be far better organized – not to mention that the atmosphere between you guys seems so much better I am looking forward to get to know you folks better, but please bear in mind that I am not the 24/7 online type of web-guy – I might tend to go deep into the bearcave for weeks for various reasons – and I think you already might guess my main reason for digging deep. I hope that beard is a dandy! I like your avatar very much, and look forward to seeing some posts from your collection. Best Regards, Chris (aka Beryllium Guy -- clean shaven) Chris; that beard is not dandy at all I´m afraid, it is most of all a result of my laziness regarding my own apperance! A two minute quick shave approx every 6 weeks suits me well:) Thanks for the nice words on my Avatar. It is a local stamp issued in the 1880´ies in our hometown Arendal, at the time by far the most import shipping city in Scandinavia with a booming economy all based on shipping, which all come to a sudden collapse following a financial crash in 1886 (Arendals krakket) and the lack of understanding that the good years for wooden ships were ended. As I love everything concerning history, and of course indeed the local history, I fell happy to live in a today sleepy and cozy town with such a rich history. Steve: Spot on! My username "Barbu" is a small 18th century "suburb" where I live approx 400 meters away from the centre of Arendal. Unfortunately, Barbu has never had a post office bearing its own name, so in philatelistic respect of the name of Barbu never to be found on a postmark, I found the name appropriate:)

Barbu Do not own a Toyota 4Runner and I do not need one As for your very nice Avatar, you mentioned it being a "local" stamp. I have not been able to find it in Scott (but that happens often !) Great to see you on TSF - Cheers René

where do you find the locals in Catalogues ? The 3 main catalogs I have only mention the early locals except for Sweden which shows the stamps
Facit Special Norgeskatalogen Handlerkatalogens
I have a WW Local catalog from 1950 that lists the majority of these locals.
Frederick A. Brofos & H. K. Thompson were authors of articles/books on locals.
Our Norway members can perhaps comment but I have read that many of the Norway locals were simply of a philatelic nature intended for collectors which may explain their absence from major catalogs?
