Looks like an inking error of some kind.

For those of us who don't know (especially me), can either of you two gentlemen describe what a "dounet" is? Perhaps a complete image of the stamp being shown would also be informative.

Steve "donut" is a term used mostly on modern stamps for a commonly found print error that leaves small circle or "donut" I unfortunately don't have any handy but perhaps someone else has one available to share.I was jokingly referring to the early(1908) print error as a modern "donut" Flyspecking is a fun past time, you will never find the elusive re-entries and plate flaws without the routine of examining each and every stamp with your loupe. Inking errors are omnipresent on almost every issue.

Does anyone know if these issues were printed in the same format as the Admirals i.e. panes of four hundred separated by uncut margins? Maybe these are just margin copies from sheets without selvedge? A by product of my reconstructing the Admirals.

Anyone with a bit of time please explain to me difference in papers on the early issues. I assume you're looking at your mound of Large Queens - those papers are referred to according to the Duckworths' book on Large Queens (a father & son pair of authors). You need to search for info on that - here's a starting point online, an article on Chris McFetridge's blog (mostly scans of backs of stamps, not too much in the way of text). The Duckworths' book is described at the top of this list of Large Queens literature. Ryan

The tail end of this Ottawa Philatelic Society webpage and the downloadable study group paper have images and short descriptions for each of 10 identified large queen paper types.

If it was a precancel, wouldn't the markings only be on the stamp?

So clearing up my put aside pile to day I came across a #14 whose perfs measure 12 x 121/4 now the given choices are 12 x 12 , 113/4 x 12 , 113/4 x 113/4.so I must be missing something or just maybe someone else is missing something. Not the first time I've found odd unlisted perfs in the cents issue. As always measure them all, watermark everything and above all loupe it all.

Sorry frog, I think it is a circular grid postmark. You can see a slight curvature on the top of the postmark showing the edge of the circle. If it is a precancel it would be quite rare on the Large Queen. It is only known on the 15c Large Queen which was used well in the 1890's era. And there is a listing in Unitrade for this.

Can anyone help with the full name of this RPO please? .... 8 CAL RPO No2 SP x7 47 I think that your "8 CAL" is actually "& CAL", which gives limited options - my book by T.P.G. Shaw lists only a few examples where Calgary is the second listed city and is abbreviated (for example, there is a single "Edmonton & Calgary" listing in which both cities are fully spelled out, no abbreviations). The only one that looks like it might fit is "M. JAW & CAL.", which is Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The other choices don't fit with your example, which appears to have either a "W" or "N" immediately before the "&". The character underneath the "C" of "CAL." is a direction indicator and one of the possibilities on that Moose Jaw / Calgary line is "E" - although it looks more like an "S", there isn't a single listing with "CAL." as the second city which Shaw shows as existing with an "S" for the direction. Shaw's listing is missing the "R.P.O." shown on your example - he doesn't give any listing which matches your cancellation device type for "M. JAW & CAL. R.P.O.". I have on occasion run across that problem before on strikes that are more completely legible, though, where his listing does not give the complete text shown on the cancellation. Other than that, his listing matches your example, type 17A for the general cancellation style, and it also matches the time period for your cancel. The rarity factor given is the most common of any listed in the book so it isn't a rare strike. Ryan

Anyone have an idea(picture) of watermarks found on Newfoundland inland revenues NFR16-20.I like Van Dam catalogue but it's lacking details like that.I found what looks like part of a crown on one but it would be nice to be sure if my old eyes are still functioning.

I want to respond, albeit a little late, to the post at the top of this page from December of 2016 regarding donut's. These are caused by a small bit of dirt on the printing plate. It stops the ink from hitting the plate directly under it, and the ink pools around the speck creating the donut shape. Called an 'ink hicky' in the printing biz. I believe I've discussed these else where. They are incredibly common and of no real consequence. I'm always a little surprised when folks get so excited by them. But I guess I'm just jaded.

Here are a couple of odd marks that I have found. Something foreign on the plate during the printing of the sheet. Hair or fibre from a rag. Bottom Left "2" Mark in "T" of CENTS

One great site with tons of info for a large number of Canadian stamps is Canadian Philately blogHe is in the process of moving everything to the new site. His old site is still online though... I really should have perused his site before printing out my album pages, as he has quite a bit of info not in the Unitrade catalogue.

Well as usual I learn something almost daily.I have been going through dating pages in all my Canadian collection and only today after decades of collecting I finally realized that NO stamps were released in the years 1940 and 1941.Were other countries on page with that?I wonder how I have stayed ignorant of that fact.
