Trying to see if the "select post" function will work, and reposting from another thread. thestampforum.boards.net/post/62123/threadFootball (soccer for the US folk) and World Cup stamps are a favourite of many countries. The link above is for the joint issue at the 2002 World Cup by all the previous winners except England. If people are interested, I can add a few (!) more issues. I'll try to stay away for some of these issues that can be of dubious philatelic interest.

I don' t actually collect soccer stamps per se, but they are often at the intersection of my interests. For instance this FDC of the Monaco bloc of the Europa 1987 issue (the theme was modern architecture) showing on the left column the Louis II stadium where the AS Monaco club plays.

And, of course, flags, flags, flags... Such as in this sheet from Portugal when it hosted the Euro 2004 tournament

And even though France won the World Cup this year, Belgium had the best team. Or at least, they thought so, as attested by this sheet! Le Monde est a nous = The World is ours.

And on a more personal note, a cover showing Cameroon' s first participation, during Espana 1982. I lived there (near the stadium too!) when they qualified...

In the "Stamps-on-Stamps" thread, way back then (http://thestampforum.boards.net/post/40419/thread) was asked the question of the world biggest stamp and the answer given was an A4-sized stamp from Mongolia issued in 2004. Here's another close contender, a sheet issued by Niger for the Soccer World Cup in 2014. Some members will appreciate the flag and Brazilian sights Cinderellas along the two side columns on the left and right. The central stamp measures 24 cm high by 15 cm wide, and the two above and below are 8cm high and 15 cm wide. I added two measuring tapes along the sides to give an accurate impression. I had no clue it was this big when I bought it. The picture in the catalog did not at all indicate an oversize stamp.

Another gift received today from my Russian colleague, this souvenir sheet for the World Cup 2018, with a nice hexagonal stamp at its heart.

Oooh, what fun. I don't have very many bread stamps to share, but I'm a big football fan so let's get to it! In 1974, the Netherlands issued a single stamp to commemorate the World Cup being held in West Germany. The tournament featured arguably the best team to not win the World Cup, the Oranje from the Netherlands. Yet they got one stamp! The '74 final is legendary. Netherlands v. West Germany. Holland goes up 1-0 thanks to an early penalty then get cocky. More interested in shaming the hated Germans rather than scoring more goals. And of course, in tragic fashion, the Germans chip away and chip away until they win the game 2-1. Such hubris! Such drama! And the only philatelic record in the Netherlands is a single understated stamp. I love it. I didn't really get into soccer until 1994 when I watched every game of the USA 94 tournament. (I haven't missed a World Cup game since.) But I fell in love with Dennis Bergkamp and the Dutch team in '94 and it was cemented in place in '98. So I've only read about the '74 team and seen clips on YouTube. The excellent book Brilliant Orange is a very entertaining look into the enigmatic Dutch style of football and provides a nice history as well. Including the infamous "Lost Final" of 1974.

Here's another. The tiny country of Uruguay is crazy about football, always punching above their weight at major tournaments (sometimes even biting their way!) They also won the first two World Cups they entered, in 1930 and 1950. Not bad at all! In 1951, Uruguay issued two stamps to commemorate winning the 1950 World Cup:

Hello! Here are two stamps issued by the Bahamas to commemorate the 1966 World Cup, hosted (and hoisted) by England. I thought the stamps were issued because England won, but it was actually to promote the tournament. The stamps were issued on July 1st and Bobby Moore didn't hold the Jules Rimet trophy aloft until the 30th. (All facts via the Internet, as I was a mere two days old when the tournament kicked off and I guarantee my parent's were not interested in it one tiny bit!)

Mauritania series issued for the España 1982 World Cup Championship, with the score of the final game as a red overprint. Part of many soccer-themed stamps I found at the stamp show last week.
