What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

It is late here in France, and I need to call it a night, but I did want to make one suggestion for this weekend: please post any material you have which is related to World War I in this thread, whatever it may be. World War I officially ended on 11 November 1918, which will be 100 years ago on Sunday. So, if you have any World War I era stamps or postal history, post-war commemorative stamps or souvenir sheets, period postmarks, war tax stamps, Cinderellas, semi-postal issues, other ephemera, etc., please post it here over the course of the next few days in remembrance of the "Great War" from 1914-1918, which ended 100 years ago this Sunday. In the U.S., 11th November is commemorated as Veteran's Day, but here in Europe, it is still remembered as Armistice Day. As I learned after the fact with help from Nelson (@falshung) some months ago, below is a collection of Delandre "vignettes" (the French word for Cinderellas) which were issued during the World War I period. I will certainly make more posts of other related material during the course of the weekend, but I wanted to include at least one image in this first post. So, let's see your World War I material!

The South Lancashire Regiment (formerly the Prince of Wales Volunteers) were formed in the Mid-1880's. The 40th Brigade of Foot (left) served in Egypt during WWI. These labels were produced in Paris and also come perforated and in at least one other colour. Londonbus1.

Three stamps from the German Kamerun colony, overprinted C.E.F. (Cameroon Expeditionary Force) and one from Togo with a Anglo-French Occupation overprint. Numbers on the cards are the Michel catalog numbers.

Followed of course by their counterparts once the occupation forces were well-enough installed to bring in their own stamps from neighbouring colonies (French Dahomey for Togo, and Middle Congo for Cameroon), with country name and "Occupation franco-anglaise" or "française" overprints.

A French philatelic souvenir issue for the centenary of the Battle of the Marne from September 1914 (where every car [mostly taxis] from Paris was requisitioned to move troops quickly from the capital to the front to prevent the German advance).

There are actually two French philatelic souvenir issue for the commemorative illustrating the Battle of Verdun. The first one is on the bottom, and the second one on the top was issued in 2017 as the original stamp was voted most beautiful French stamp of 2016, which qualified it for a second philatelic souvenir run.

French issue from 1978, for the 60th anniversary of the Armistice, which was signed in the railcar shown in the stamp, and which can still be visited in its original location of Rethondes, near Compiègne.

Below is an interesting piece of postal history from the U.S. during World War I. In fact, I previously posted this on the Postmark Calendar back on the anniversary of the date in 2017, but it fits very nicely to the theme of this thread, so I will use it for double duty! Read more: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/426/postmark-calendar?page=165#ixzz5WRAqI7h2This example is U.S., Scott #406, 2-cent carmine, perf 12, type I, probably from a booklet pane, cancelled on 21-Aug-1916, in Columbus, Ohio. The sender was stationed at Camp Willis (U.S. Army), during World War I. You will notice that the stamp and postmark are on the side of the envelope with the sealing flap. That is because there is a black-and-white photo on the other side of the envelope, shown below the stamp and postmark. Some online research indicates that Camp Willis operated from 1911-1920 in the Columbus, Ohio area: digital-collections.columbuslibrary.org/cdm/ref/collection/memory/id/6092 A bit of added personal connection to this item: the recipient of this letter was my maternal grandmother, who lived from 1899-1975, so she would have been 17 years old at the time and living in Cleveland, Ohio, and the sender was one of her cousins, who was in the U.S. Army at the time training to go to war. I do not know what eventually happened to the cousin, if he went overseas or not. I came into possession of this cover after my maternal grandfather passed away in the 1980s, and it was found in a box of old letters in the attic of my grandparents' house by my mother, who dutifully saved the philatelic items for me. Thanks, Mom!

Labels issued by the Scottish Branch of the British Red Cross in support of Flag Day 1915. Depicted are Regimental Badges, 10 of them pertaining to Scotland. The labels were also printed and sold from their own individual sheets.
