The National Philatelic War Fund made lots of money to help with the War Effort including auctions, sales, philatelic days and more. Organized by various Philatelic Organizations of the Day including the Junior PS and the Royal. This issue shown here was Printed by Perkins Bacon and issued to Aid the British Red Cross and The Order of St.John of Jerusalem.

Daily Mail and Evening News Red Cross fund Poster Stamps by Frank Brangwyn. Below them is an order form to make sure you get your copies and 'do your bit for Britain' !! I don't think the order form can be used any longer !

Below is an interesting piece of postal history from the U.S. during World War I. In fact, I previously posted this on the Postmark Calendar back on the anniversary of the date in 2017, but it fits very nicely to the theme of this thread, so I will use it for double duty! Read more: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/426/postmark-calendar?page=165#ixzz5WRAqI7h2This example is U.S., Scott #406, 2-cent carmine, perf 12, type I, probably from a booklet pane, cancelled on 21-Aug-1916, in Columbus, Ohio. The sender was stationed at Camp Willis (U.S. Army), during World War I. You will notice that the stamp and postmark are on the side of the envelope with the sealing flap. That is because there is a black-and-white photo on the other side of the envelope, shown below the stamp and postmark. Some online research indicates that Camp Willis operated from 1911-1920 in the Columbus, Ohio area: digital-collections.columbuslibrary.org/cdm/ref/collection/memory/id/6092 A bit of added personal connection to this item: the recipient of this letter was my maternal grandmother, who lived from 1899-1975, so she would have been 17 years old at the time and living in Cleveland, Ohio, and the sender was one of her cousins, who was in the U.S. Army at the time training to go to war. I do not know what eventually happened to the cousin, if he went overseas or not. I came into possession of this cover after my maternal grandfather passed away in the 1980s, and it was found in a box of old letters in the attic of my grandparents' house by my mother, who dutifully saved the philatelic items for me. Thanks, Mom! That is an interesting photo. It sure doesn't look like Ohio. It looks more like Arizona. That's interesting to me because my grandfather was in the artillery stationed at Camp Douglas aka Camp Harry J. Jones in 1917/18. This camp was in Arizona near the Mexican border, and saw action a few years earlier during the Pancho Villa era. I have some photos he took while there.

For what it's worth, I agree with you that the landscape shown in the photo does look more arid than what one would expect in Ohio. Well, all I know is that the envelope was mailed from Camp Willis, but perhaps the photo is from somewhere else? Just a guess....

Walking through Aix today, I couldn't help but notice the street sign below: So, "RUE DU 11 NOVEMBRE" = November 11th Street, and "EX - RUE DE LA GUERRE" = formerly War Street.... personally, I am glad that they changed the name!

Some replica postcards from the time: On the left: Little post from the front Notice the cancellation, it says "Trésor des Postes". What does this mean? I translate effortlessly. These two words signify that I charge the Post Office to bring my kisses to my little Treasure. (Pun in French on the two meanings of the word Trésor) On the right: Letter to the Dad Full of love my letter has wings. I await news from you soon. On the left: Great soldier that I love, to reward you, I send you this flower, and my softest kiss! On the right: I await with longing your news. The soldier's dream

Just a few of the most gorgeous WW1 Propaganda stamps from a set of 10. Issued in Booklets which are as scarce as an Inverted Jenny !! (or so it seems). Rule Britannia !! When you really think about such labels... they are disgusting !As they say: good taste and the truth are always the first victims of war.

Two French stamps showing the centenary of the US entry into the war, and that of the Mobilization in France. On a related note, I drove to the Belleau Wood battlefield and US cemetery a few years back, when my brother-in-law discovered that his great-uncle had fought (and been decorated) there, to take some pictures for him. It rained then too, but I went anyway. And it cleared up while I was there. The burial grounds are beautifully maintained, the guides present very helpful and friendly, and there is a discovery walk in Belleau Wood itself where you can still see trenches and foxholes and various pieces from the time. Plus the drive itself is through very pleasant scenery. I certainly recommend it.

Xavier, as I informed you by e-mail, it is a great pleasure for me to send the missing Austria B7, MH-VF, to you. It is already ready to Post to France but I have to watch the Post Canada "strike" situation before mailing it....so I will check the situation prior to mailing it. René

So glad that you can do this for Xavier ( hrdoktorx ). I have duplicates of the first four stamps of the set myself, but not the one he needs, so I am glad that someone else was able to help. This is just one of the many reasons why I love being a part of the group on TSF. Thanks for being one of the really great people here.... Best Regards, Chris

hrdoktorx Very nice S/S and so are your covers...... René I agree with you, René, Xavier ( hrdoktorx) has lots of excellent material, well worth sharing! Thanks, Xavier, for your continuing support of this thread. As I was at the market in Aix last weekend the day before the 100th Anniversary, the stamp dealer sold me this postcard from the WWI period, sent from Washington, DC to Cleveland, Ohio (my hometown), and it had a nice clear strike of a wartime slogan postmark " food will win the war; don't waste it", dated 17th February 1918.

World War I Era U.S. Patriotic / Political Postcard featuring President Woodrow WilsonThis WWI period postcard features a political message in support of the policies of then-US President Woodrow Wilson. It is postmarked on 21-Dec-1917 in Tacoma, Washington and mailed to San Francisco, California. It is a very nice clear-strike machine cancel from the period.
