While the development of 12-tone music is generally ascribed to Arnold Schoenberg, Josef Matthias Hauser developed the compositional style independently of him, and published his first 12-tone composition, "Nomos," more than a year before Schoenberg's first 12-tone piece appeared. Austria Scott Nr 1235 (1983)

This is the stamp of the French composer Gustave Charpentier (1860-1956) issued in France in 1962. He is best known for his opera Louise, which is written on the stamp. It's unknown to me why the stamp features image of a church.

@linda, courtesy of my friend and fellow classical-music-on-stamps collector, Doug Briscoe - that is the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, a prominent landmark in Montmarte, where Charpentier lived, after returning from Rome, and where he finished composing “Louise.”

France honoured Frédéric / Fryderyk Chopin (1810 - 1849) twice on the stamp, whereas his native Poland had issued way too many stamps of him; of which I have only collected one. From left to right: (1) France, 1956. (2) France, 1999, on the occasion of Chopin's 150th death anniversary. (3) Poland, 1962.

The French Baroque composer François Couperin (1668 - 1733) is known for his contribution to keyboard music with his famous book L'art de toucher le clavecin ('The Art of Harpsichord Playing'). His music was notably rediscovered and popularised by contemporary pianists such as Marcelle Meyer and more recently Alexandre Tharaud. This French stamp was issued in 1968 on the occasion of Couperin's 400th birth anniversary.

Although the French composer Henri Collet (1885 - 1951)'s music is rarely heard today, French post issued a commemorative stamp for him in 1998.

Leoš Janáček (1854-1928) created some of the most original and innovative music of the late 19th and early 20th century, with the last decade of his life seeing him compose some of his most highly acclaimed works, the opera, "The Cunning Little Vixen," his "Sinfonietta," and the orchestral rhapsody, "Taras Bulba" among them.

I have a playlist on Spotify devoted to Dvorak, Bartok and Janáček works. I haven't listened to much Janacek, but am intrigued by what I have read about him, and will explore some of his music tonight. If you care to share your playlist you can find me under my name Ted Tyszka. I connected my Spotify account to Facebook, and it tells me I have no friends on Spotify, though FB shows you as friend. Go figure.

The German composer Hugo Distler (1908 – 1942) was also an organist, choral conductor, and music teacher. His compositions fall into the Neo-Baroque category and is 'tonally anchored'. He died by suicide prematurely at the age of 34. This stamp was issued in 1992.

Thanks eggdog! If you are into piano playing, you can also look for Rudolf Firkusny's recording of Janacek's music, and of other Czech composers' music. I got to know him thanks to his collaboration with the Austrian violinist Erica Morini. The small label Supraphon has issued many Czech musical gems recorded by Czech musicians. My favourites are all things recorded by the incomparable Ivan Moravec.

Arrigo Boito composed very little music. A Symphony in A and the libretto and music of an opera Mefistofele (plus some unfinished works). He also wrote the libretti for Ponchielli's La Gioconda, and for 2 Verdi operas, Otello and Falstaff. Italy, Scott Nr 982 (1968)

This Faroe Islands issue of 2020, celebrating Beethoven's 250th birthday, easily takes the cake, as the most unusual design for that subject.

This French stamp of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was issued in 1966. In 2 years it will be Fauré's death centenary. Will La Poste issue another stamp commemorating this composer?

Enrique Granados (1867 - 1916) was a Spanish composer and concert pianist. My first exposure to his piano music was Alicia de Larrocha's recording. This Spanish stamp was issued in 1967 on the occasion of his birth centenary.
