Doug Briscoe posts a daily reprint of an "Arts On Stamps of the World" column he wrote for ArtsFuse.org. www.facebook.com/doug.briscoe.942Yesterday's column featured Swedish composer Carl Michael Bellman (1740-1795). There is some further interesting discussion about him, in the comments section, with Martin Best. This is Sweden, Scott Nr 2725 (2014) And here is Epistle #82 for which Martin Best posted the translation, in Doug's FB post.

On the left is a German stamp issued in 1985 on the occasion of Handel (1685 - 1759)'s birth tricentenary. On the right was issued in 1959 as part of a souvenir sheet that commemorates the inauguration of Beethoven Hall in Bonn, which also coincides with Handel's death bicentenary.

Over in the Liechtenstein maxi-cards thread, I just posted this card about Josef Rheinberger. He was a Liechtensteiner composer who lived in Germany. Wikipedia has some samples of his music.

In this thread I will show composers on stamps of Austria and Germany.
Austrias only set of composers,issued before the war,issued April 24th,1922; part I of 2; 2 1/2 K. (+ 22.50 K.) Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
5 K. (+ 45 K) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) 7 1/2 K. (+ 67.50 K) Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Issued May 30th,1959; Haydn composed an enormous wealth of all kinds of music. I like his symphonies very much.Their number is not 100% sure, but 107 are agreed widely. They seem to be so light-hearted and fresh. Beethoven was his pupil for two years.Although he claimed, nothing to have learnt from Haydn, his symphonic works, namely the 1st,2nd and 8th symphonies show clearly Haydn´s influence.
The melody of the German National Anthem is from Haydn´s "Kaiserquartet" opus 76 No.3.The original text started:
"Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser..."(God save Franz the Emperor...)
Here are all the Austrian stamps honouring Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809), issued in 1922, 1959, 1982, and 2009. Germany has hitherto issued one stamp of Haydn as part of the celebration of the inauguration of Beethoven Hall in Bonn in 1959, which also coincides with Haydn's 150th anniversary of death.

Born and raised in the Holy Roman Empire, Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714 - 1787) was a composer of French and Italian opera who spent the last part of his professional career in Vienna where he passed away. Here are two German stamps issued in his honour, the one on the left in 1987 on the occasion of his death bicentenary, and the one on the right in 2014 on the occasion of his birth tricentenary.
This Austrian stamp was issued in 1987 to commemorate death bicentenary: No known Czech, French, Italian stamp of him exists, according to my research.

Vincent d'Indy (1851 - 1931) was a French composer and music pedagogue. This stamp was issued in 1951 by the French Post as way to commemorate d'Indy's birth centenary. In Montreal, there is a private music college named after him, so his name is quite well known around here.

Before adding this stamp to my collection, I have never heard of the German composer Walter Kollo (1878 - 1940) of operattes, German-language music drama and popular songs. This stamp was issued in 1978 to commemorate the composer's birth centenary.

Joseph Lanner (1801 - 1843) was an Austrian composer of dance music notable for his waltz. This Austrian stamp was issued in 1951 on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary. I was first introduced to Lanner's composition at a concert in Montreal dedicated to Schubert and conducted by the then OSM music director Kant Nagano. The lady who sat next to me happen to be a huge Schubert fan, but like me, she too had never heard of Lanner's name. We all marvelled at how knowledgeable the music director was about classical repertoire.

More than a demi-god amoungst the composers: Johann Sebastian Bach.
If I had to choose the only one composer,I ever could hear the rest of my life, for sure my choice would be J.S.Bach.

Frederic the Great was an exceptional broad minded man.
He was a virtuoso on the flute and composed a number of concerts for this instrument, what are still performed today. Frederic performing,on the painting "The Flute-Concert" by Adolph von Menzel.
Both stamps were issued on Aug.14th,1986,commemorating the 200th death anniversary of Frederic "the immortal",as he was called in a letter by Voltaire.

It's hard for me to associate Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) with one or two countries: Born in what is nowadays Austria, and died in what is nowadays Germany, Liszt is generally considered a Hungarian composer who had spent a significant amount of his life in Paris, among other European cities. So far I have collected all the Austrian stamps related to him. My set of his German stamps is incomplete, and I have only two of the many Hungarian stamps that honoured him. From top left to bottom right: (1) German stamp issued in 1973 showing Liszt House in Weimar. (2) German stamp issued in 1986 on the occasion of the composer's death centenary. (3) German stamp issued in 2011 on the occasion of the composer's birth bicentenary. (4) Austrian stamp issued in 1961 on the occasion of the composer's 150th birth anniversary. (5) Austrian stamp issued in 1986 on the occasion of the composer's death centenary. (6) Austrian stamp issued in 2011 on the occasion of the composer's birth bicentenary. From left to right: (1) Hungarian stamp issued in 1967 showing a portrait of Liszt by Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900). (2) Hungarian stamp issued in 1986 to commemorate Liszt's 175th birth anniversary.

Robert Schumann (1810-56) was an eminent composer of the german romanticism. Married to Clara (Wiek) the most celebrated female pianist of her time,he developed a mental illness in later years, most likely from syphilis. Stamp issued July 28th,1956,commemorating Schumann´s 100th death anniversary.
On July 20th,1956 the DDR (GDR) issued two stamps for the same occasion. However "a little mishap" had occured: the notes in the background were not from
Schumann, but from Franz Schubert ! The stamps were withdrawn on July 23rd and declared invalid on Sept.30th. However they nevertheless were sold to collectors as c.t.o. On Oct.8th,1956 a corrected set was issued, now with notes of a Lied by Schumann.
Schumann´s 200th birth anniversary,issued May 6th,2010.

Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632 – 1687) was an Italian-born French composer of the Baroque period who spent most of his life working in the court of Louis XIV of France. The date of issue of this French stamp of Lully is hard to ascertain; it seems to be from circa 1956. Can someone verify this?

Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632 – 1687) was an Italian-born French composer of the Baroque period who spent most of his life working in the court of Louis XIV of France. Funny, in researching a stamp DDR issued in 1987 for historical statues of Roland, I find this: Jean Baptiste Lully wrote a 17th-century opera with a libretto by Philippe Quinault.
Funny how two wildly different subjects have a relationship with each other!

Paul Gerhardt 1607-76,a Lutheran theologican and priest was the most important composer of hymns in Germany. His life was coined by the horrors of the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and the conflicts between Lutherans and Calvinists. His hymns are still today a corner piece in the protestant books of hymns in Germany.
Stamp issued May 18th,1957,commemorating Gerhardt´s 350th birth anniversary.
May 13th,1976,300th death anniversary March 1st,2007,400th birth anniversary

Karol Szymanowski, considered by many to be Poland's second-greatest composer ever. (Witold Lutosławski gets many of the rest of the votes, with Krzysztof Penderecki gaining on them.) I've listened to a fair amount of his music. I've at least enjoyed all of it, and I've gotten enthralled by some of it. The strange thing is that I've heard nothing by him that sounds much of anything else by him; of all the prolific major composers, he's one of the hardest to pin down to any school, sonic style, recurring themes, or anything. If you're interested, you might think about starting with his solo piano music. I can't recommend any performers in particular; a multi-volume series on DUX, an excellent Polish specialty label, had a number of different soloists, and the ones I've heard have all been more than trustworthy. 1961 FRG definitives (from a set of 18),often regarded as the most ugly german definitives ever, with the colour changed one of 1962 and the one for Berlin (from a set of 15). I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I can't think of a single other German definitive series (years 1933-45 excepted) that I dislike even just a little bit, but they picked some truly unpleasant portraits for this one. Makes you wonder what they were thinking of. In fairness, though, I've seen very few portraits of Bach that don't look like "Get those kids off of my lawn!" The 2000 stamp you posted at least layers out his meanest glares. Stamp issued May 18th,1957,commemorating Gerhardt´s 350th birth anniversary. I was wondering when somebody would put David Crosby on a stamp!

Carl Maria von Weber 1786-1826 was a composer, conductor and pianist. Two compositions made him very popular: the romantic opera "Der Freischütz" and the rondo for piano "Aufforderung zum Tanz". (most often heard in the orchestra version by H.Berlioz)
In the English speaking world he is also well known for his last opera "Oberon". It was written in English and had premiere in London in 1826. Von Weber, who needed the money to provide for his family after his death, conducted the premiere himself. He died from tuberculosis just days later, near London. Stamp issued June 20th,1986,commemorating von Weber´s 200th birth-anniversary.
Issued May 13th,1976,150th death anniversary
Issued July 5th,1952 (from a set of 3) and Nov.4th,1986.

Here are all the Norwegian stamps related to Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907): From left to right: (1) & (2) Issued in 1993 on the occasion of the composer's 150th birth anniversary. Does anyone know the relationship between Grieg and this scenery pictured on the second stamp? (3) Issued in 1983. Set of 4 stamps issued in 1943 on the occasion of the composer's birth centenary. I am surprised that Norway didn't issue any stamp in 2007 to commemorate Grieg's death centenary.

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767),a contemporary of Bach and Händel was one of the most prolific composers ever.A man of the Baroque his works span over the Rococo till the early Vienese Classik. He was befriended lifelong with Händel.Bach new him well and liked and even copied his music.Leopold Mozart inroduced Wolfgang Amadeus into Telemann´s works.Soon after his death nearly forgotten or discredited as a flat "quilldriver", he has been re-discovered in the 20th century.
Commemorating Telemann´s 300th birth-anniversary: FRG,issued Feb.12th,1981 GDR,issued May 5th,1981 (from a set of 6)
