An interesting philatelic object from the German post for the 75th anniversary of Helgoland becoming German.

A good friend of mine was a Heligoland specialist. Sadly he passed a couple of years ago. This is my favourite German Heligoland commemorative, from 1940. Heligoland was ceded to Germany in 1890. The souvenir shown by hrdoktorx was issued in 1965, and added to in 2002 on the 50th anniversary of Heligoland being restored to Germany after WWII

My other Helgoland stamps, on their album page, so I can see the extent of the work remaining to be done:

I have always had the impression that most of the stamps from Heligoland are either forgeries or reprints so I have avoided all of them either as a collector or as a dealer.
Do you guys have any details on how many actual stamps were produced and how to tell the difference?

Thank you very much, Allan! It looks great.... I have already downloaded a copy for my library. Perhaps now I will have the courage to take the plunge on trying to collect some of these stamps.

To seriously collect Heligoland requires extensive study. The forgery/reprints actually add interest. Given that a lot of information is available, one can put together an impressive collection and research that few countries offer.
Chances are that any collections from previous owners are probably mainly reprint/forgeries for most of the values. I use the term reprint/forgery since the dealer Goldner concluded a transaction with the Postmaster ( definite "collusion") to have thousands printed. The postmaster turned over the stamps to Goldner for distribution. One might conclude that these were "semi-official".
Later Goldner bought the dies from the government that was in need of funds and the rest is history. Goldner had the original firm print the stamps which at this point would be forgeries since no government permit was issued.
A new Governor put a stop to this and Goldner moved on to 2 new printers.
So we have 3 main different reprint types and many sub types. Fortunately between head types, perforations, color, gum, paper, UV light almost all can be distinguished. For about 75%, some conclusive characteristics can be applied such as: All perforated 2 Schilling stamps are reprints. All perforated 6 Schilling stamps are reprints Michel 13, 14, 15, 16 have no reprints ...and so on
About 1.7 million were officially printed and a good portion were sold as remainders to other dealers. Goldner printed somewhere between 5-6 million
True forgeries are actually very uncommon and they are poorly lithographed with no clear embossing
A major issue is postally used stamps. Since few were used and generally are much more valuable, fakes abound. However, here also, the actual postmarks are limited and manuals will cover the genuine ones.
Time & energy permitting I will/may add actual images of the more common genuine/reprint issues at a later date.
A search will bring up several good web sites on these issues and good books include: Helgoland Philatelie - Hellmuth Lemberger (1970) Grosses Handbuch der Fälschungen - Stiedl/Billigs (1935) Helgoland 100 years - Kuhlmann Kohl Helgoland Manual Books by Rudolf Mensendiek / Bernd Grohs

A page of HELIGOLAND / HELGOLAND Replete with reprints of course but there are 4 or 5 which I believe are genuine originals < my eyesight and patience have prevented me from sorting these seriously for years , I simply tucked them away as they appeared , Originals have a respectable catalogue value so I am about to list them on ebay at 30 Euro and let someone with the knowledge and confidence take over. Shown here for future reference but open to any reasonable offer from our members ...

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

With the recent discussions on this country I decided to share this page from my father’s Scott British Europe album. I may have added one to the small collection and I have always assumed they are reprints.

A few more Helgoland items Firstly a souvenir sheet reproducing a West German stamp marking the return to West Germany of Helgoland on 1st March 1952. The islands had been captured by the British in 1945, evacuated and used as a bombing range! The sheet also shows a 1972 stamp from West Germany postmarked for the 35th anniversary of the return. A mint version is shown below the sheet. Also showing 3 Cinderella stamps depicting the islands from a much earlier era.
