Dakar, Senegal - 1933 Registered Air Mail Cover I still remember the day I copped eyes on this fellow. It was love at first sight.

What the hell is the "anonymous society of ancient establishments"?
More seriously, what is the date? It appears to be 1925, but I can't quite tell.
Dakar was an early node in the development of airmail routes, resulting in a proliferation of postal rates.

Oh, sorry, I have updated the original post with the year - 1933.
Societe Anonyme is an old fashioned term for corporation (a business owned by many people). I am pretty sure the "of ancient establishment" is just an honorific add-on to indicate that it is a long-established corporation.

I put the scan in my Retroveal program Am sure the last # is a 5 but the one preceding looks like a 3 - note that this overprint stamp was issued in 1927 but the Postmark is not as easy even with image modification Nice though !! The actual full name name was Anciens Etablisssements E Cauvin-Yvose As noted Ancien Etablissement would refer to an older establishment (company) According to the ad, they sold tents, tarps, flooring & bags
A Societe Anonyme was one where the shareholders/owners were anonymous As shares were unregistered, this could allow for money laundering, tax evasion, unrecorded transfers and redemption of shares etc - the "anonymity no longer applies to the same extent

Thanks Nelson for the Translation of this cover - I probably, as a french-canadian, should have done it but the "date" was the subject of my experiment, though the images were difficult to decipher, even with Retroveal. Hope everyone has learned through these posts (as I have) - René

An interesting registered cover, sent on July 5 1949 from St Louis Senegal to New York. There are two arrival cancels on the back, dated July 9 and July 11. The stamp was originally issued by the Vichy govt in 1942 but stocks never reached Senegal and were only sold in France. After the war, there was a shortage of high value stamps so this and a 50fr value were sent to Senegal for postal use. Gibbons only lists these 2 stamps as being postally used. The Dallay catalogue I have only lists them as mint ,not used. From 1944 to 1958 stamps from French Equatorial Africa were used in Senegal.

A letter from Senegal addressed to the directeur of Rocks and Minerals,Peekskill,New York. There is an arrival date stamp from Tuxedo Park,NY dated Feb 9 and also 1934 appears alongside the missent cancel.I looked at this with Retroreveal ,the day is illegible but the year looks like 1933.The month Janv is also inserted back to front. Rocks and Minerals is a magazine still in print today.
