My first copy of the magazine arrived today with a coupon good for one year membership in any study group. The cover letter apologized for delays associated with the mail strike.I haven't opened the magazine yet so I'll let you know about that later.the envelope was nicely franked with large denomination recent postage. At this time I'll rate the experiment three out of five stars.

So, the groups have study groups that require membership too?

Yup, one apparently is free, IIRC. I was a member of the Eastern Ontario/Seaway group, but never made it to any of their meetings. Too far to go for me. And if they were like the Trenton Stamp Club, it would have been a dreadful bore for me.

well Pete seems all the stamp organizations must think alike. The president of the local group already contacted me and said the next meeting was Labor or was it Memorial day weekend...ARE YOU KIDDING me? Why in the world would you interrupt a holiday weekend with such a meeting?I did glance through the magazine not impressed. While a lot of obvious work went into it an article on the printing differences on an early and quite frankly beyond most budgets imperf stamp ?Only someone with unlimited money could explore such a thing.A good portion was dedicated to some rather uninteresting postal history covers. The best covered the international color scheme to designate rates in regards to the Newfoundland issues.Oh well I may resign myself to never taking pride to adding letters after my name. After my own experiences it really means nothing other than you got sucked into paying dues.

Frog Agree with 90% of what you are saying.....these orgs have to make $$$$ to support their cause.....here it is a good cause because we are in the same "sport". However, it is true that without $$$ you do not belong to the "gang". I support both BNAPS and RPSC for now, left APS as I was not in the right Country....no advantages.....nice "journal" though. I read everything that comes in(journals, 1 by electronic means) except the....... advertisements (adds)!! René

firstfrog,
Did you rate it 3 of 5 stars just because it was late due to the strike?

I left because I didn’t get anything out of their magazine. Very arcane material for the most part. I dropped out of all societies this year. I’m spending too much at this auction I frequent! That is money better spent! Although now I am being overwhelmed!

It is a challenge for a group to produce something useful for a group with diverse interests. I will note that most any group has a backlog of published articles that members have never seen. The challenge is to make them available in a fashion that is tailored just like you see in social media. For example, youtube knows I like old movies so it is constantly suggesting movies.

angore I rate it as I see it, NO three stars is while positive not great. I recognize the challenge that is faced but they are the one's who elected to put it out there for the world to see and judge.Your idea is probably more in keeping up with the current times and I hope someone takes notice.I would hope out of a thirty page magazine more than three pages would be of some interest.Example while well written the new issue section is two pages on YES one stamp giving the history of some shark species,REALLY ?If I wanted to know about the shark I could WIKI it.It will be a short lived experiment.

firstfrog,
In your original post you mentioned you had not opened the magazine when you gave the rating. If the 3 out of 5 is for reading the magazine, then I have no further questions.

BNAPS, this Forum, and philatelic societies in general depend on member submissions for the content of their journals and newsletters. The BNAPS journal, BNA Topics, was published on a monthly basis during 1945-47 but its publication frequency has declined over time to bimonthly in 1976 and the current quarterly basis in 1994. Past issues of BNA Topics may be viewed here (the last 5- to 6-years are only available to members). While printing and distribution costs likely contributed to the change, I'd wager that a decline in member submissions also played a role in the reduced frequency (as it has here with our Newsletter). I don't know how an entity can provide material with wide-ranging appeal without first polling its members and then paying for the content that best reflects member interests.
