Discovered this this morning... The Barcode was patented in 1952, but when in US stamps does this come into play? This doesn't look as much fun as my Dick Tracy Decoder ring!

I have one of those too. It's a polarizing light filter that allows you to see some hidden designs on certain stamps (for instance the ones illustrated on the decoder packaging). I don't think the USPS continued this practice very long.

One of my favourite modern abstract artists is Yaacov Agam from Israel. He has long used lenticular printing in his art. This brief video clip gives a good overview of many of the styles he's used over his career - at the 0:30 mark, he is holding a piece which uses lenticular printing. And for stainlessb , this website gives a list of all the US stamps which used lenticular printing for use with your decoder. Elsewhere on that site you can see scans of the stamps in question with the area of interest circled so you will know where to look. A while back on TSF I posted some photos on a "mystery box" thread (a firstfrog2013 giveaway) - you can see how the hidden image appears as the lenticular lens gradually aligns with the printing.
