This Mourning cover postmarked Sept. 4, 1897 intrigued me, not just because of the interesting San Francisco machine cancel. I've never seen California abbreviated " CALA" before. Overall just a nice cover; too bad it fulfilled its function (as a "Mourning Cover") and contained bad news for someone's loved one. I am not sure if my bid will be successful (online auction hasn't closed yet) but I thought I would share it and see if anyone has information on the cancel.
