I was looking at a Tibet stamp, thinking it would be really neat to own a stamp that's from the top of the world, so to speak. Do you think this stamp is legit? It is listed well below 10% of catalogue value, but we are not interested in owning a forgery. Any assistance is appreciated.

TSF member classicalstamps is the author of the website stampforgeries.com . Have a look at his page on the 1933 lion issue for a look at a sheet of genuine stamps and a number of forgeries. Since the copy you show contains a margin, you know it must be the bottom right stamp from the sheet. On a quick look, I see it as looking more like the genuine issue than any of the displayed forgeries, but the stamp has poor printing quality so it isn't so easy to see all the details necessary. The stamps were printed in sheets of 12 (4X3) individually different. That would make the stamp a bottom right cutout as noted. The Tibet stamps are extremely complicated. Scott mentions 1933/34 but in reality this 3/4 Tranga stamp has 4 printing periods from 1933-60 with 10 different settings The 1933 setting looks quite good and has pin perfs which you can see in the image below. The latter settings are imperf and the print has badly deteriorated So that leaves the stamp shown The cancel looks like the genuine but the letters seem thick The stamp itself has many areas that do not match up like the lion's tail, letters on the right side, T of TIBET is shaped wrong. Forgeries are numerous and there are unauthorized reprints Given the image to work with, I would say this is part of a forged sheet

Thank you both! You've been very helpful. I will pass on this copy, but will keep in mind the info you've shared.
