I've had regular success removing the security cut self adhesives with lighter fluid then sliding flat nose tweezers/tongs between the Stamp and paper

Vince stanley64As mentioned earlier, these are all non self-adhesives and I had no problem soaking them off the envelopes.I just pop them in a bowl of lukewarm water and off they come.I have found though that stamps on the comnon brown/buff envelopes tend to take a little longer to soak off. I don,t try to soak off the current self-adhesives,just neatly cut around the stamp. Anglobob

I appreciate the education; I thought that all Machins i.e. those with the syncopated perforations, aka elliptical perforations, were created equal and were of later issue. With that, no need for me to change my current procedure - "...any Machins I save from the post will simply be cut & trimmed."
Happy collecting!

Over the last few days, I summarized the issue dates for all the prestige booklet up to 2018.
For my Machin pages since I want to put in chronological issue order, I will consider to use whole panes from booklets rather than singles if the pane introduced a new variety rather than a single that has been removed from the booklet. These booklets complicated Machins even more with more source varieties yet few likely saw real postage use. They would not be found in mixtures.

As I was organizing Machins by year, I got to 1993 and this was a big year for Machins varieties. The year featured elliptical (or syncopated to some) perfs, a new horizontal issue, and a self-adhesive issue. This multiplies with print method, perforation varieties, tagging variations, etc. If you want to add more fun, one can all the printers.

GB QEII machin pair with perforation flaw? Graham Going through this thread, I noticed this query and I think that I can explain what has happened here. They are not from a booklet, rather they are from a machine dispensed coil (trimmed lower perfs were also common with coil stamps). Coils or Machin Multi Value Coil Strips are discussed elsewhere on the forum and a link is given to a list here. The only combinations that have a 1/2p preceding a 1p are the 5p strips with PVA Gum or Gum Arabic: 2p, 1/2p, 1/2p. 1p, 1p. these coils were dispensed from vending machine often attached to post boxes. So, you inserted your 5p coin, lifted up the flap and out would come your strip of 5 stamps but still attached to the roll. You would then have to detach the coil by lifting it up and the dispensing machine cutting tool would cut through the perforation. This cutting tool would have been a simple serrated edge. I know from my experience of using these machines that it was possible, by pulling the strip first (a natural reaction to seeing your strip appear) before tearing it off, to get a little bit of the next stamp on your strip. Of course, unless rectified, this would have a knock-on effect across the entire remaining roll resulting in multiple different miscut coils and eventually a coil ending in 1/2p, miscut 1p. So, the end 'perforation' is actually caused by the cutting tool. Note also, that the pair has been cancelled twice, once by machine cancel and once by a handstamp. It would appear then, that the miscut stamp has been noticed at some point and referred to the Enquiry Office at Portsmouth, probably accepted and sent on its way.

I know, but you had two posts! I saw this one first! What I did, Pete is check the interest first before starting an Auction and then I saw your Offer - In fairness I should have cancelled the Auction and scans which were already posted Dilemma (ethical) 1) I cancel the Auction since your offer preceded the Auction 2) You already bid $10 which started the auction SO, in fairness........I leave it to you but if I cancel my Auction I need an $ offer from you which is acceptable (shipping included) in $C
We shall see what you want.....meanwhile AUCTION on "hold" as of Sunday 6 PM Atlantic time
Sorry !!

Offer received from Pete brightonpete - official I am truly sorry about my mix-up which happened in the middle of one of my musician's friend "passing" (death), yesterday. I started playing music (guitar) with him (keyboards) at age 16 and many times since. Even followed him for his CHD (coronary heart disease) and did some fund raising programs for our Heart Association in Canada. Have a good week you all ! René

So the Y series took a lot less time to organise and catalogue... but so many more gaps I’ve got all this to come. So far I’ve got a box full of Machin’s sorted into values and colours. Now for the hard bit. Well done sorting yours and I’m sure I could help fill some gaps for you and will equally have many gaps myself. Graham

My order of some specialty NVI Machins (different printers) arrived so now can get closer to finishing my custom pages. I’d love to see some pictures of progress. I’m waiting on some stiffer paper to arrive before I print out my pages and start mounting the stamps. Oh and I need ‘lots’ Of clear mounts. Graham

What a great thread! Who said plain old modern stamps are boring. I suppose some scoff at the Machins, but I started a collection a few months ago and I find it one of the most interesting of modern issues. I've already filled 2 Lighthouse binders with mint singles, multiples, covers, booklets, booklet panes and miniature sheets and haven't even really dented the possibilities. I have several thousand used singles (collected over many years) to sort through whenever I can find time to do it. Really interested in more posts from others interested in this fascinating area.

There are so many varieties that the search is endless. I prefer trawling through the bags of kiloware to find different varieties. Much more fun than just going out and buying them, although for those elusive ones a dealer is often necessary. I’ve just bought the specialised Machin album pages download from adminware.ca and they look great. I am sure I will never get the full set as there are so many. Good luck hunting through all the old stamps. I’m sure it will be great fun. Graham

The odd perforation is an elliptical perforation that was used as a security feature. Scott calls it a syncopated perforation.

I don't think that radiocruncher was referring to the elliptical perforations, rather the missing perforation along the bottom edge. If it was deliberate, it could also be referred to as a syncopated perforation but I don't believe that it is known process with Machins and don't see that it serves any purpose. I think it is notable as a missing or blind perforation.

Thanks for the info angore but I was referring to the lower central section of the perforation where it appear that one is missing. This edge is cut as well so it’s going to be out of a booklet pane. I’ve never had a look through a Scott catalogue but I hear them referred to often so I must try and get my hands on one to see how they compare to the Stanley Gibbons versions.

I haven’t yet found a reference to it anywhere but on a Facebook group they said it can happen. They think it’s a Harrison print with a broken pin. Not rare aparantly but not common either if that make sense. I wonder if anyone else has one to compare. Graham
