The early decimals Machins (X and Y) were mostly grouped by printer and print method. Now, Scott does not list the phosphor types (2B, LB, RB, all over) but to their credit they list some thin/thick values and EME types that SG Concise ignores. Prestige booklets add a more of more source varieties. I prefer to use a subset of the Adminware Intermediate pages as a guide. It lists more than Concise. For example, I would like to collect JET phosphor but have not even seen an image of one under a UV light. For reference, here is a link to some pages based upon SG Concise scope but in chronological order. I had used these to order my pages (have not finished). www.gbstampalbums.co.uk/files/09_QEII_Dec_Machin_Free%20(Concise).pdf

That looks great, Al (angore). I checked that link you added, but it's 404. I have been to that site and should go back. Chronological fits better in my mind than all one value, then another or type...
Thanks eh

I was also wondering about the 1st 4 issued in 1970. Colnect lists them as the same size as subsequent issues, but at GLB they show as larger frames for those 4. I've seen other errors in sizes and dates etc as I look for stuff. Make me wonder about just how accurate Colnect is.

Hello all,
I'm not even sure where to start with Machins. Are there some high-level, simple overviews out there? From my limited knowledge of the series, I currently envision myself building my Machin section so it has one of each denomination (pre and post decimal) and one of each colour that denomination came in. I want to include the regionals. Is there perhaps there's a list of Scott or SG numbers and descriptions for the series as well?
Thanks for any thoughts.

If I had to get one book, it would be the Stanley Gibbons Concise. Now, some US dealers only know Scott. Scott does not list phosphor varieties and SG Concise does not list EME varieties. You can use online resources like colnect to cross reference. If you want a basic album consider this one Adminware website. It is free, You may have to register (no charge) to download. Now, Adminware uses colors from Royal Mail and SG assigns the color. For example the color flame is orange-red in SG. SG will list shades of standard colors if seen. adminware.ca/album/machin/machin-basic.pdf

As I mentioned in a post here 2 days ago (watcha been stampin), I said I would post some lists of the GB Prestige books with their pane & book numbers. Just finished scanning the lists as my scanner has been doing its own thing for 2 days. My apologies for the format (wrapping etc). The list works backwards from the Rolling Stones issue to Wedgwood in 1972. Several more books have been issued since the Stones booklet. Any missing booklets have stamps which are not relevant, for example, just commemoratives. Any mistakes/typos in the list I'm logged out. Thought the list may be useful to Machin collectors instead of looking for different sources publications etc for the info.

John is a good dealer. I've bought Machins many times from him in the past. He likes buyers to email him a list of items for purchase, he then prices them per the list & returns the email, I then used to pay by card over the phone, job done.

I was working on my Machin pages and came across something I had forgot. The last Harrison printed 1p crimson was printed in a specific ink formula (see attached images for information). The last and subsequent 1p were printed in what Deegam calls dark maroon rather than crimson. They are all Crimson to SG Concise. The question is how to positively identify from color alone as I see all sorts of variation. If I read it correctly, there may be color variation of the crimson since the printer defined the actual formulation. I am not sure if there was variation that it was wide enough to be dark maroon. Now with 1p samples I have the color seems to vary even in the new formula. I look at some other 1p crimson and none seemed to be a purple as the new formulation. Hmmmm Pics top row =PCP stamps middle row - ACP stamps bottom row - later printings (eliptical) spec'ed to new color. I see the bottom row has more purple and the right on middle row is fairly close to right on bottom. It looks like both had T1/T5 values and were ACP.

For my post above, I did get an answer.
For sheet version there is no way to determine except by color. For booklet, the new color was only ACP booklets with sideways right printing.

There is a nice aspect of PDFs. You can mark them up using Acrobat reader or other free readers. For PDF Steiner pages, I add catalog numbers before printing. For other PDFs I have used to organize/plan my custom album pages. As I learn information, I often will make notes in the PDF as one bridges the world between various sources of information.

I had sent an email to Robin Harris regarding his Machin pages (adminware) and he sent back some corrected pages to add the dark maroon variety!

You can just click in the image to save it and goes to imgbb where it is hosted. I saved one of your recent images so noticed you were using it.
