I have been thinking of collecting the work of the great engraver Czeslaw Slania for a while. I'm not sure I will start now, but I will start this tread where we, the members of TSF can post images of our stamps and other things that Czeslaw Slania engraved. Late Mette Heindorf made a great site containing a lot of information please visit here. However the stamps on Heindorf's site are in lower resolution. So find your stamps, banknotes etc. and scan them and post. As I'm not a collector of unused stamps, most of my scann's will be of used stamps, but I choose those where I can show most of the engraving without a cancel. When I feel for it I will add some information of the motive on the stmp(s) and or how Czeslaw worked on that particular stamp. In most cases I link to wikipedia. I will try to give the stamp numbers, I don't have Scott, but will try to find the right number. However Michel is my main catalogue source and if I find others I will post those to. I scan the stamps and other stuff in 600dpi. For full image just click on the image. Please enjoy and participate. Anders Zorn Famous Swedish painter.

Two souvenir sheets produced for 'Polphilex '66' held in both London and Birmingham and organized by the Union of Polish Philatelists (UK). The central Stamp-like design was engraved by Slania.

Sweden, March, 2, 1973. Turism. 3 of the 5 stamps were engraved by Slania.
On the lower left corner of the Vasaloppet stamp, you can see Slania's selfportrait.

Nice thread - Slania surely was an artist beyond anyone. He is most saluted for all his fabulous pictorial stamps - but did you know he also did definitives? The 'workhoses' among stamps are often not recognized for what pieces of art they are - and Denmark paid tribute to them by having Slania engraving this definitive of Queen Margrethe II. Look at the details!!

Purchased this directly from Slania at the Colombian Stamp Expo in 1992. I’m not sure what causes the paper discoloration but I believe it was like that when I bought it. I was floored when I first saw this - it looked like a photograph that came to life. Breathtaking! Here is a pic of the Czeslaw Slania Study Group in 1992 at the Colombian Expo in Chicago. Slania is seated at the center. I’m in the black and white dress on the left.

Slania engraved several portraits of King Carl XVI Gustaf. My personal favourite is the definitive series that was issued between 1985-1990.

philatelia - So cool that you actually met our super-hero! He was very soft spoken and warm. He brought quite a few sample of non Philatelic work and seemed particularly proud of those boxers Like the ones posted above by Londonbus1 and other items like the one I purchased. I was shocked that he was asking for such modest amounts for his work. Definitely not a greedy man!

Some more stamps engraved by Czeslaw Slania. Firstly, a set of two stamps from the Republic of Ireland celebrating the centenary the Irish Rugby Football Union, 1874-1974, SG 363 and 364 shown in pairs. Then, from Denmark, a miniature sheet for Hafnia 1976, SG MS630, depicting a Mail Coach driver. Scan_20201217 by Daniel, on Flickr

For someone who is widely, and rightly so, referred to as The master, one would expect to see here a good portion of his 1000 + stamps. But then again, as Jerry B stated, there’s this remarkable site by the late Mette Heindorff. After philatelia /s very personal touch to the thread it’s difficult to contribute to the substance of the topic.
However, I will add some stamps in the hope that future newcomers, as me at the moment, will find their inspiration in Slania’s work.
1. Poland 1952, Auto Assembly Plant Zeran, Mi 788 Where The master used his own face as a model for the worker and which I call ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’;
2. UNO New York 1986, from the Philately series, Mi 496. Where Slania is featured some 30 years and 1000 stamps later.
P.S. Then again, there are his long series running through the 70s and the 80s for Denmark and Monaco respectively, showing Danish regions the former and paintings of Monaco during the belle époque by Hubert Clérissi (b. 1923) the latter. Or those butterflies from the 1999 joint issue between Singapore and Sweden.
Looking forward to more engravings by Slania!

For fans or admirers of Czeslaw Slania's work, here are a few more links to follow,
at the same time, in honour what would have been the man's 100th birthday, a number of events have been planned,
No translation wheel included, but you are all big boys and girls; enjoy the reading...
Happy collecting!

The Mette Heindorf website referred to by tobben63 in the thread's initial post has been relocated and may be accessed by clicking here. When Mette (as she was known) became ill in 2007 and was no longer able to maintain the site, Todd Ronnei offered to host it and Mette accepted his offer. As previously stated, Mette passed in 2009. Per Todd, the site remains mostly unchanged from her original design. Todd recently relocated the site to a new URL: www.ronnei.com/slania/index.html. Google does not yet point to the new site address, so he needs to generate some traffic. Please visit the site and spread the word.
