vikingeck - At the Houston show last month one exhibit brought you to mind, a PPC 1-framer about Cigar Manufacturing in Cuba in the early 20th century.

Hi JeffS . That sounds interesting . My tobacco is a 5 framer and if I were to expand it has to go up to 8 or I have to do a rewrite chopping and changing which is an alarming and daunting thought. The exhibit you mention excites me to consider using some material only for a sub topic one frame exhibit. I have a germ of an idea “ Transatlantic tobacco trade in the 18th & 19th centuries”

I have a question about classification. How do you classify this stamp from Poland 1996. Is it an anti-smoking stamp as it is a cancer smoking a pipe or is it a tobacco stamp as it is a crab smoking? I lean towards anti-smoking as everyone knows that cancer is bad for you.

magnusc I take it as a Zodiac symbol (cancer) with a bit of creative license.

It is indeed one of a series of 12 Zodiac signs.
I have not included it in my “Counterblaste to Tobacco” collection exhibit , but maybe I should consider it.
The link between Cancer the Zodiac , cancer the disease, the smoking crab is not one I had thought of in connection with this stamp . Possibly the artist was making the connection for us , it certainly is imaginative thinking.
I leave it to you to decide Magnus……..there is no answer. I certainly could be a subtle anti smoking link!

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Stumbled across this 1989 Pakistan stamp today. I know it is not tobacco but the image fits with some of the anti smoking stamps issued over the years included in this thread. It was issued as part of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) that declared 1989 as Year Against Drug Abuse.

I came across this tobacco subject from Peru vikingeck. I'm sure you have it but just in case you don't, let me know. A lot of tobacco-related subjects in one stamp.

JeffS, yes indeed I have this Peru in several guises, colours and overprints. Thanks for the heads up. As it has lain dormant for some time I must scan some more pages from my collection. Trouble is they are. A3 sheets

A Cover from Mignot & de Block, Eindhoven in the Netherlands to Messrs D Merwan in Bombay, British India. Postmarked Eindhoven 26th June 1915 and with a Bombay Censor mark in purple. Mignot & de Block is a family business that still exists today. They started as a cigar and cigarette factory in 1858. At the end of the Second World War rolling paper was in short supply and importation was not permitted. Frank Mignot found the solution at a Bible publishing house in Limburg who used fine, thin paper, perfect for cigarette rolling paper!

Tobacco Duty Relief Tokens
Back in 1958 when tobacco was not thought to be detrimental to one's health, pensioners were able to claim a weekly Duty Relief of 2 shillings and 4 pence using stamps issued in booklets by HM Customs and Excise. 3 panes and one partial pane (hence the non-consecutive dates).

I believe the post war Labour government raised the tax on tobacco a) to reduce consumption , a failure in 1946 , b) to pay for shipping of other goods trans Atlantic. Eg wheat. The increased tax caused an out cry of protest so concession booklets were issued to old age pensioners ( I guess they might as well smoke themselves into an early grave and save the government money from the pension funds)
I don’t know when the booklets started to be issued (in the late 1940s ?)but would have been destroyed once the tokens were used,or returned to the pensions office on death of the pensioner. I have a few earlier stamps but as The concession was ended by the Tory government in 1958 , these unused concession stamps are the survivors from 1958.
Earlier dates are rare. I don’t know what happened tothe used tokens, I have never seen one .

Having just exhibited my “Counterblaste to tobacco” exhibit to the stamp clubs in Solihull and Glasgow in recent weeks , I was challenged about Vaping as a substitute for smoking . Does anyone know of stamps depicting vaping .?
I believe Canada has revenue tax stamps for vaping products can anyone assist me with getting an example or two ?
are there any other countries with tax labels ?

I did a quick Google and it lead me to this Government of Canada site that does show a picture of what the stamp is to look like: www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/edn80/overview-vaping-excise-stamps.html
