The Smithsonian National Postal Museum has a free, downloadable album which has spaces for around 785 stamps from various stamp issuing entities throughout history. I recently started this collection and am really enjoying it. I’ve learned a lot about various so-called dead countries and recently ordered copies of “The Stamp Atlas” by W. Raife Wellsted and “Where in the World? An Atlas for Stamp Collectors” by Kenneth A. Wood to help with this collection. There is another book, “The World History Stamp Atlas” by Stuart Rossiter and John Flower, that I also intend to get. I doubt very seriously that I’ll be able to complete this collection as several of the stamps needed are pretty expensive, especially the Swiss canton issues. Overall, though, the majority of the stamps needed are affordable enough even for stamp collectors on the tightest budgets. One area that has me concerned with this type of collection is forgeries. Many of the countries/entities in the album only issued overprinted stamps and those are relatively easy to forge. A lot of the stamps needed are also prone to traditional forgeries. Short of getting all of these issues with certificates, extreme care will be needed in procuring many of the needed stamps. Overall, though, I’m really looking forward to working on this collection and added 13 issues I needed from eBay this weekend. So, is anyone else attempting a collection of this sort? Are you using the Smithsonian album or something else?

Thanks Ryan! I was familiar with Dead Country Stamps but the other 3 were new to me.
