Thanks for inviting me into the group. I have been collecting world stamps, souvenir sheets, booklets and many other postal related items since I was a kid. My father collected his entire life also so his and my collection has been melded together for the most part. In this post I am probably referring to many of the posts I have read here. My mounted collection is ever changing but it includes, but limited to, all of the items listed above mounted in Scott/chronological order. I have for the most part stopped buying, unless I can't live without it, since maybe 2010. I have accumulated many file cabinet drawers of materials for mounting and I hope to get through it before I can no longer work on them. Like many, I'm starting to get up there in age but still active in other interests, when I'm rolling I can reach up to 40 or more hours a week working on the collection. I feel there are many hobbies wrapped up in this activity all the way from research to engineering. At this time one country at a time is being restored as many pages are getting old and show their age and as I go I'm adding all of the accumulated material to the album. New pages are designed and printed along the way. I have created a template that is almost an exact copy, in size and design, of the original Minkus pages as a base for each page, then each item/group gets a description the the top and catalog number on the lower right outside the box. I have been through many large format printers over the years and at this time I use a commercial HP lazer unit that I've printed, without exaggeration, 3,000 or more likely 5,000 pages. The printer has shown no sign of problem. Everyone in the house uses the printer to print on 8.5x11 sheets, I have not counted them. I could ramble on but do not want to wear out my welcome.
I just want to get it out that I'm preparing to get my house on the market and moving south to get away from the winter weather. I'm not sure, at this point, how I'm going to protect my collection as I may be without a house for a time. I don't trust anyone to monitor the temperature and the humidity for the area with many many albums and plastic bins of materials. At this point the collection is housed in a 12x15 crowded bedroom. Any good suggestion will be considered and appreciated.
Thanks Again! Steve

Hey grumpy, welcome to TSF. Thank you for posting such an excellent introduction. I think "...there are many hobbies wrapped up in this activity all the way from research to engineering" is an insightful thing to say. I feel the same way.

grumpy welcome to TSF! as to your storage dilemma, there are 'tupperware" type totes available (although a bit bricey) that I have seen, and these might work with the inclusion of some dessicant (silica pillows, etc.) A gun safe ... a bit heavy to ship, but it could hold a bit, although if your collectio/mass hoardes of stamps is like many of us.... you might need a couple of safes.... and still place dessicant inside If you have access to a "seal-o-meal" you could vacuum pack ...at least groups of pages... albums may be difficult, there's my odd assortment of thoughts as I approach bedtime Cheers Stan

Welcome!! I am not sure how to deal with your storage issue unless you store them in an environmental storage facility. It could be like loading up a POD (load it yourself) and then having it stored. Then you have to deal with security. The second aspect is transporting it to new home.

to TSF and good luck with your move to the South and choose your spot well as the South is not that warm in some places, having vacationed there 6 months/year for 6 consecutive Winters. I prefer the Northern cold weather, like Pete !! René

Welcome to the Forum , Grumpy!
i envy you moving to the warmer south. I wish that was an option for me after the winter we had in my part of Canada. I can not offer advice about moving and storage. Though I had to move my collection to various home because of flooding concerns. The boxes and containers will be moving home this weekend. Might give me time to edit and re-organize a de things.

Pete brightonpete - just got up and I am not good with numbers - I remember shoveling nearly every day lol and he figures shown come from a site and we had more than that !! In Edmunston, New Brunswick - the snow depth was 119 centimetres (50+ inches). This is the most snow the city has seen since 1980.

Hi Grumpy Don't get rid of the snow blower. You are going to need it. Believe me. I live in Marietta and we get snow every now and then and being from Maine I have to laugh at the way everything goes to pot with an inch of snow. Just a maybe it might snow causes panic and the supermarkets are emptied. You would think there was going to be a good old fashioned Northeast blizzard I had a neighbor from Marblehead, Mass who went to Sears to buy a snow shovel. They offered him a grain scoop. He had his brother send one from Marblehead. So if you have one of those save it also. Chains can be handy as it snows one day, melts a little, turns to ice. Best advice, if it snows, light a fire, get warm and stay home until the snow melts, one or two days. Jerry B

Hi Grumpy!
Nice moniker, I'm surprised it was still available; there are quite a few easily-irritated collectors in every group!
Regarding moving stamps, I have moved my rather bulky accumulation myself (a room and closet full, like many old-timers) more times than I care to remember over the years. My tip would be to pack small boxes, as stamp books can be heavy as heck. If you do use larger boxes, top them off with some pillows, lampshades, or linens, so the overall weight won't break your back!
You could use a commercial shipper too (common carrier) but call first with the number of boxes, approximate weight, and your originating and destination zip codes. It might not be quite as much as you think. Of course you'd want to tell them it's heavy books (not valuable) and consider if there's a chance they'd go missing what would you do.....
