The elaborate design of this set of 4 beautifully engraved poster stamps, an allegory of mail delivery, shows Mercury (or Hermes), messenger of the gods, poised between a steamship and a train. The set, printed by the American Banknote Co., was issued for the Third International Stamp Exhibition of 1936. The exhibition was held in New York City May 9-17, 1936. The United States issued a souvenir sheet on May 9, 1936 to mark the event (see Scott 778).

This set of four was engraved/printed by the American Banknote Company for the Centenary International Philatelic Exhibition held in New York, New York, May 17-25, 1947. Portrayed on the stamps, from left to right are: Dom Pedro, ruler of Brazil when the first Brazil stamp was issued in 1843; Queen Victoria, monarch of Great Britain when the first stamp was issued in 1840; and, James K. Polk, President of the United States in 1847 when the first U.S. stamp was issued. Below Queen Victoria is the Coat of arms of Switzerland, the only other country to issue stamps before the United States. Here are two additional poster stamps related to this exhibition:

Very nice Exhibition items all. Great stuff.
There are now seperate threads for Exhibition material for the following countries/Groups of countries.
Philatelic Exhibitions---U.S.A. Philatelic Exhibitions---Australia. Philatelic Exhibitions---Canada Philatelic Exhibitions---Great Britain Philatelic Exhibitions---Rest of Europe Philatelic Exhibitions---Rest of World
That way there will be good order and after reading Rod's comment about Poster Stamps, it will keep ALL Exhibition material together and sorted into areas too.
Later, and if needs be, we can break it down further if such material is posted.

With permission from you all I'd like to split this thread up into sections for easier future searching. I propose the following......
Philatelic Exhibitions---U.S.A. Philatelic Exhibitions---Canada Philatelic Exhibitions---Great Britain Philatelic Exhibitions---Rest of Europe Philatelic Exhibitions---Rest of World
I will do the work later if Steve [original Poster] and others are OK with this.
Sounds good to me!

Done !
I left Rod's post [above] about the two USPS cards. If Rod wants to Edit his post and seperate them I will put the former into the GB thread as it was issued specifically for Philympia, London 1970. But it is not so important as both were issued by a US Company and still fit right in.
Nice USA thread.....thanks all. lovely items.

The Association of South Jersey Stamp Clubs celebrated the Penny Black Centenary on May 5th 1940. A Jamboree no less !! ...and the Washington State Philatelic Society celebrated the Centenary in a similar fashion. Finally for now, a post-centenary item with a Centenary theme. A letter sent to members of the Glen Ellyn Philatelic Club [Chicago] in 1941 by the President F.R.Hayworth. The letterhead was enhanced by a Club Cinderella celebrating the Penny Black Centenary. F.R.Hayworth was one of the founding members of the Club, which is still going strong today. Londonbus1

Women's INternational Stamp Club, Annual Exhibition, 1959. I believe this is still a 'Philatelic' address today.

This label portrays the original ATA logo -- it identified the organization until the second ATA logo was introduced at the 1971 Convention and Exhibition held June 18-20 in Syracuse, New York, at the Onondaga County War Memorial.

Not so sure about that Steve. The eagle and what looks like a 1922 2ยข Washington (I'm assuming it's a #554, but I can't check the perfs) scream USA to me. I have no indication on my label of age or anything like that, but I think the font suggests 1930s. I found a couple of other cindys from a National Philatelic Society in the States in the early 20th century, on line, but can't nail anything else down about them. This website has an impressive cinderella collection (worth checking out anyway) and the first two rows have some NPS labels. www.angelfire.com/crazy/mikary522000nh/stamp1.htmlHere's one I downloaded. Sorry, the image is small, but it does say National Philatelic Society in the circle.

James, I didn't pick up on the stamp image but see it clearly now that you have pointed it out to me -- it is definitely a U.S. organization but I've been unable to find anything of substance regarding it. The American Philatelist Yearbook, Volume IV, October 1889 to September 1890, makes reference to an executive committee (p. 150) comprised of American Philatelic Association (APS forerunner), National Philatelic Society, and two other groups charged with arranging a philatelic exhibit at the World's Columbian Exhibition so the entity was in existence for at least 25 years prior to its 1916 convention.
