i just finished writing up this cinderella on cover and thought I would post it before consigning it to my album. It is strictly a philatelic item commemorating a space theme at the 14th National Postage Stamp Show sponsored by the American Stamp Dealers Association. It is franked with one of the most attractive U.S. commemoratives of the 1960s, in my opinion. It is Sc. 1193 depicting the orbital mission of Friendship 7 piloted by John Glenn. This was the U.S.'s first orbital flight around Earth. I collected the cover, though, for the cinderella pair, one tied by a NYC bullseye cancel, depicting the rocket assembly that carried the space capsule into orbit. I wish the cover had been addressed. I just like addressed coves better.

A recent acquisition with an APS souvenir label on cover from the 43rd annual convention & exhibition held in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, in 1929. There were four labels in this set. This one is just barely tied to cover with the cancellation touching the perfs on the right edge. The cover is franked with the five cents stamp from the two-stamp set commemorating the Aeronautic Conference held in Washington, D. C., in 1928. The cover is addressed to the Monopol Stamp Company, an old-line dealer dating from the early years of the 20th century.

I went to the stamp show in Grapevine, TX., Friday last and found this item in a dealer's $1 box. Strictly philatelic with no message on the reverse, but I eagerly paid the price. I have both of the cinderellas in my fledgling collection, but finding this usage tied to a first-day cover of Sc. UX44 was a pleasant surprise. Don StampHinger

A cover with an advance label for the 1947 International Philatelic Exhibition in NYC commemorating the centennial of U.S. Postage Stamps, tied by the cancel dial on a first-day cover commemorating the centenary of Joseph Pulitzer's birth, Sc. 946. I collected the cover for its tied cinderella.

A cover posted on the opening day of the 1956 American Philatelic Society Convention in St. Louis, Missouri, with a pair of Squier & Co.facsimile locals canceled by a Jordan's Penny Post reproduction handstamp. According to the Fields-Picklo listing, these facsimiles were printed in imperf'ed sheets of 80 from which this vertical pair was cut.

It's very nice to find this tread; sorry to miss it before. I delight in these big things. So unlike the long-conservative designs of stamps; the more exaggerated, less inhibited, the better. But if they're just stickers, they're less interesting. To get my money, they have to be cancelled. But I just about gave up on finding anything on cover related to my eye-of-needle narrow interests.
Here is one I found recently, amazed to find one used and pretty from 1896. I have no idea about the event itself. One source reports they showed off air conditioning. There is a one-minute Lumière Brothers movie from the event. Oh, my; genuine goats! The stuff movie pioneers would point a camera at.

This cover has a tied souvenir sheet from the 1937 52nd Annual Convention of the American Philatelic Society held in Detroit, Michigan, August 31st to September 3rd. The sheet reproduces a mural of the French explorer Antoine Cadillac landing at Detroit. The original of this piece of art, according to the Fields/Picklo listing, was in the offices of the Detroit Free Press. Fields/Picklo lists the sheet in four colors, brown, green, purple, and blue which is on this cover. Judging from the address on the souvenir sheet itself, the addressee picked up a souvenir sheet, took it home or to work, typed his address on it, applied it to the cover and returned to the show and had it canceled. The sheet is just barely tied by the cancel. Elmer B. Cookson, the addressee, has an entry in the 1935 Blue Book of Philately that tells us he was born in Philadelphia in 1885 and collected U.S. commemoratives and world-wide stamps. Again, judging by the address on the s/s, it appears that he may have worked for the Detroit Free Press, or at least had an office in its building.

A philatelic cover canceled on the closing day of Chipex III that includes a Relief of Illinois Bataan prisoners of war cinderella. The cover is very lightly addressed to a convention attendee at the LaSalle Hotel. An internet search revealed that a Bataan War Relief organization was established in 1942 in New Mexico. An Illinois chapter of that group may have produced this label. Perhaps, LondonBus can provide more information about its origin.
As an aside, the cachet on this cover is a match for the official souvenir sheet co-sponsored by the Central Federation of Stamp Clubs and the Society of Philatelic Americans for this convention. Parings of souvenir sheets with convention cachets is becoming a growing collecting sideline for me and I am buying them whenever I find them reasonably priced.

stamphinger........this is from Vol 3 No3 of the Newsletter: The Battle of Bataan will long be remembered in the annals of World War Two as one of heroism, valour and courage. American and Filipino Soldiers held out for over 3 months against all the odds, with the enemy Japanese Army having a much bigger army and more equipment. From April 9th 1942, over 70,000 Prisoners of War were forced into the Bataan Death March, where torture and death were commonplace. Many perished. In the USA, a group of Patriotic American citizens and friends and family members of those who fought at Bataan set up a fund-raising committee to help those survivors. The 'Bataan War Prisoners Relief of Illinois' was formed under the Presidency of Mrs. Lucy Palerno of Chicago, Ill. They had a Bill passed in Congress for the purchasing of food and clothing for the POW's to the amount of $25,000. On top of this, other fund-raising ideas were put forward including the printing and sales of Poster Stamps. These were first announced in the National Poster Stamp Society Bulletin of August 1944 where the first of the stamps could be seen. Beautifully-designed, the 1944 label (undated) shows an injured Soldier being comforted by his/a Mother with peaceful hills in the background. The second label is inscribed 1945 and shows POW's looking grimly through a wired fence. The Poster Stamps were available from the President of the Committee in Chicago at 2c each, which by today's standards seems a rather paltry sum!!

WISC on this souvenir sheet is not the old abbreviation for Wisconsin, but rather that of the Women's International Stamp Club of New York City. The sheet commemorates the club's one-day exhibit held on April 26, 1952 at the Collectors Club in New York and is tied to cover by an April 26th cancel. The Fields/Picklo catalog indicates this is the only cinderella item issued by the club for this event. The cover is franked by Sc. 1006, the 3 cents stamp commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, first issued on February 25, 1952.

Out of my shoe box collection comes this 1941 souvenir label from the National Air Carnival held in Birmingham, Alabama. Oddly, it is tied to a commercial cover for a New York City company. The cancel does not show up well against the dark blue background of the label, but added light and magnification shows it was canceled in Birmingham on May 8, 1941. I identify the aircraft in the center of the label as a Seversky P-35 (military model) or a Seversky Executive (civil model). This aircraft is on another cover I posted in an Aircraft on Covers thread last year (May 10, 2019). See thestampforum.boards.net/post/75685/threadDon StampHinger

Thought I'd better help out stamphinger and post a few on this very nice topic. I am not a collector of covers and most that I had were just extras in lots or given to me. But a packet from Aix-en-Provence and then a visit there seemed to change my mind a bit about covers. So yes, I blame Beryllium Guy for this but do not tell him. He might not speak to me anymore !! Here's a couple I received/found in that Philatelic haven in the South of France.

A recent acquisition of a souvenir sheet on cover from Polonica, the 2nd annual stamp exhibition of the Polish Philatelic Club of NYC. The cover was posted the first day of the show. The Fields/Picklo listing indicates that this sheet was printed in three colors: red & blue, green & blue, and brown & black (this one). The central image reproduces Sc. 319, the 1937 Polish stamp commemorating the 150th anniversary of the U.S. constitution. The Fields/Picklo listing shows only two souvenir sheets from this club. I am now looking for the sheet from the 1st exhibition in 1955.

I posted this cover elsewhere but it really belongs here too, so I'll cross-post it (I think that's what I'm doing!) A 1920 Austria inflation-era registered cover with TWO Cinderellas! The colorful light bulb label on the reverse really caught my eye! I purchased this from an auction-house so it was not too cheap, but I like it! Really "lights up" my collection.....

A food product label tied to a post card. This card looks like a joke exchange from a family member to a grandson or nephew or maybe just between friends. Magnification and extra light indicate the card was posted on July 16, 1938 at Erie, Pennsylvania. I collected the card for its food advertising label. Franked with Sc. 790, the one cent Navy issue of 1936 and a sailing scene on the reverse. Don StampHinger

Continuing in voluntary confinement, I have been writing up some covers from recent acquisitions to pass the time and this one's turn came up. It is a WW II patriotic with a health-related label tied to cover. The label is dated 1944 and issued by the Chicago Heart Association. According to information found on Google, the association had its beginnings as the Chicago Association for the Prevention and Relief of Heart Disease in 1922. This organization changed its name to the Chicago Heart Association in 1925. While not specifically stated, it appears that the association continued until circa 1950 and, perhaps, then became an affiliate of the American Heart Association. I don't know if other labels were issued.

Here is an Oregon Centennial Covered Wagon Mail local post label tied to cover by a local statehood centennial postmark. The cover also commemorates an Independence, Missouri to Independence, Oregon route on the Oregon Trail and is appropriately franked with the 4 cents Oregon Centennial stamp issued on February 14, 1959. As a bonus the stamp has a nicely centered Pray for Peace slogan cancel. Regrettably, I have no information on who produced the local post label or if it was issued in other colors or denominations.

I bought this somewhat ratty cover not for the stamp dealer advertising, but for the block of four Geo V 1d cinderella on the reverse. Fields/Picklo lists more than one variety of this item and I'm not quite sure which one this block is. It doesn't meet any of those described exactly. I'm tempted to soak this cinderella off this cover because of the cover's poor condition and the coarseness and probable acidity of its paper. Soak it or leave it alone? Any recommendations? stamphinger, I would absolutely keep that cover as it is. A beauty. The labels come in many different formats and colours and I have never seen a list. They also come in at least 3 different sizes so there is a lot to look for. Usually they don't come cheap although I did win a couple of different types last week for 50c each. Both red too.

A stamp dealer's cover from the Gunesch Precancel House in Chicago with a Precancel Stamp Society souvenir sheet for the 1950 annual exhibition. Adolph Gunesch was a leading precancel stamp dealer during the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. The Fields/Picklo catalog lists this s/s as the only cinderella item issued by the Precancel Stamp Society for its 1950 exhibition. An added collecting point for me is the mute cancel with a clear slogan cancel.

Here's a cover from the 1st German Philatelic Convention held in the UK. From 1964, the event took place in Stockton-upon-Tees. The label was taken from a sheet of 4, Imperforate and is cancelled by a 'Germania Posta' postmark. Love the address label too !

Here's one that travelled from London to Lundy Island and then to me. By Road or Rail, Sea and Air ? I can believe can't I ? Lundy Island Postcard, franked and with a special cancel for the 1st Cinderella Congress in London, 2016 (see my first Newsletter article !!). A set of Lundy 'views' including a nice image of the MS Oldenburg which not only carries visitors to the mainland but also the mail ! The label is a Swedish Cinderella Stamp Club commemorative issue. The Club were joint organizers of the Congress and hosted the Lundy Post Office on a beautiful looking table. Congress was held at the Royal Philatelic Society (London) former premises in Devonshire Place....sadly no more. The Lundy, Bristol Channel barcoded Meter (RM) is a curious one. Used for use in Europe (20g) but Israel is not considered to be part of Europe in the eyes of Royal Mail !! Maybe I was just lucky.

Lovely cover Londonbus1 and the puffins included as part of the Lundy cancel are bonus :-) I have to agree with Royal Mail though, Israel is not part of Europe and any map I have seen clearly shows the nation sitting smack-dab in the centre of the Middle East....
Happy collecting!

This cover was prepared on the first day of the 1973 National Air Post Exhibition held in Toulouse, France. The special event postmark supports this. Unaddressed but with a nice show Cachet and label although the latter is not inscribed for the event but merely states the dates.......which I find rather odd ! There may be other colours of the label but have not found any yet.
