I got this in the last auction, hidden between 30-40 covers. I need to dive into the danish quadrat stamps. Is it no. 4 - 7 or 9 or a mix?

Your scan is not very clear in the corners but they look to be wavy lines in the spandrels rather than dots . I do not see any rouletted edges, so I am going to go with Facit catalogue #7, the 1858 issues which come in various shades from 5 different printings .
there are postmarks From the southern duchy of Holstein which are of added interest.
116 Gluckstadt 117 Heide 118 Heiligenhafn 123 Meldorf. Or is it q133 ? 182 was very scarce on this issue before 1864 Arnaes. But it may be a late use from the Jutland Railway ......needs investigation. 188 was used on the post office of one of the ferries

Thanks a lot vikingeck If you click on image there is a link to full resolution. If not I have a 1200dpi resolution I can upload. Really interesting what you tell about the postmarks, I have no reference to check those I think. I think it must be 133
(I need to clean my scanner glass)

Ah sorry, ! Full resolution confirms Wavy lines in spandrels. Definitely no. 7 The 182 looks like an earlier orange brown rather than one of the later muddy brown or red brown printings h( hard to tell from a scan) so it could be a scarce usage before the office changed following the war of 1864 when Prussia annexed Schleswig Holstein

9. BREDSTEDT that is relatively scarce 10 BURG that is relatively scarce
36 KOGE 45 NIBE 63 SKANDERBORG 88 ROSKILDE

Very nice quadrants tobben63. Cool to find such beauties unexpectedly. I am also very attracted by the interesting numeral postmarks. vikingeck already covered those thoroughly. If interested for future reference, here is a useful link for the Danish numeral cancellations: www.gpfs-online.org/danemark/dk/dknumeros1.php

Quite a lot of study time on these issues. It is some time since I sold my collection Denmark 1851-64 and I have also sold a couple of reference books but here goes for starters.
I am suspicious of the bright rose pink 16s , the genuine rouletted stamp in good condition fetches up to $400 . That looks too bright and the image is too small for the frame. I suspect it does not have a watermark . it is a facsimile.
In the same group the 4rbs has the mute target cancel used before the numerals were issued. The yellow brown under print looks quite strong and if it feels slightlyridged it is from the first printings by Ferslew. When he died the plates were used for printings in a more purple brown by Thiele The 2s Facit #3 , and the 4s with dotted spandrels Facit4 are both fine with excellent margins.
Incidentally when the first stamps were issued in1851 the 4 RBS was released before the lower value 2RBS so the Danes number them 1 and 2 while Scott and Gibbons have the reverse order , 2 &1.
I’ll work back on the other images.

8 S and 2 S. Dotted background. Facit 3 and 5? Postmark 181? on the far right. 181=Gare de Sjællandske Yes dotted spandrels confirm 2s #3 and the 8s are all #5 . 181 is indeed Zealand Railway. o

Here are three FIRE R.B.S I cant see the numbers in the postmarks and I have not tried to find what printing, plate on them. The first looks like Thiele 1st print after the Ferslew issues. The other two are later Thiele III in the yellower brown shades. i wonder if the images are true colours as they look redder than I expect . The middle one has a distinct print flaw with a crack in the frame below FIRE. R. I believe the postmarks are mute target , 16 and 1.

Is it 71 on the 4 S on right? 71= This 4RBS is The middle Thiele print run . Thiele II with slightly blurry print as the plates wear and the typical purple brown ink shades. The Preetz Holstein cancel is better!

I have a fellow collector in Aberdeen who specialises in the Bicolour issues. He can tell matrixflaws , frameflaws and printingshades in detail and quote them all day long “ that one is printinG 36 and that on is printing 29 etc etc “
For me that way madness lies!
The squares were complicated enough . Ha ha !

Ah! tobben63 , it is sad how soon one gets out of practice. I collected these issues seriously for 30 years but sold the collection and my reference books 4 years ago now. I struggle now with identification. I do not see any that are for sure the first Ferslew printings. #4 is very fine with the complete mute cancel before the issue of numbers. I suggest Thiele 1 printing #1256 are all Thiele II the colour of the scans may not be true but suggest the others are platesIII and IV from the Thiele IIIprint runs . This is where there is most colour variation with chestnut brown being the scarcest shade . there are serious frame splitting varieties showing in at least two stamps #3 and #8 . i need to check the numeral cancels where they occur to see if there are any scarcer towns. Later!

I’m so glad this thread was bumped - I missed it the first time. OMG this is why I love this forum - the information here will be extremely useful when I have the time to study my modest accumulation of quadrants. I especially appreciate the link to the city number cancel reference. So cool! This is why used stamps are a thousand times more interesting to me than mint. Thanks, my friends for sharing!
