After going through ~50-60 stamps I have found 2 of the Type II, with an almost equal balance of Types I and III. What differentiates the three Types is the floret in each corner "box". Type I - the 4 petals of the Florets and borders are solid Type II - 4 petals are solid, but top right "box: inside border is broken Type II - borders solid but pedals (2-3 of the corners) are incomplete (holes) Type I Saint-Etienne cancellation  Type II Basse-Goulaine cancellation  Type III Le Chambon-Feugerolles  |

[ADMIN NOTE: The above post was merged into this thread while performing some Forum housekeeping tasks.] I thought I would start a new thread devoted only to the Ceres stamps- Below is a snapshot of what i received today, mostly imperf 20 c imperf, but a few other surprises as well- the question becomes "Which series of Ceres... (sorry... couldn't resist) is it? I will soon become even better friends with Maury (Et Al), after the current focus on Sowers (no earth) is being undertaken ( I blame @ renden entirely for this as is pages prompted me to wonder... "I wonder how many of those I have...." ah, but the ways of staying stampy!) I also received quite a few Napoleans in the same lot... but for another time/post/focus      |

stainlessb Stan Your nice France stamps as scanned do show us some Émission Cérès, type Cérès 0f 1848-, I believe (since Xavier hrdoktorx is watching), evidently imperf....the early ones. After you show us some perfs Céres of the 1870 or so, called Siège de Paris. Both series are in your Maury.I also see possible Cérès from Émission de Bordeaux, 1870s, but I am not certain. You also have Émission Cérès `GRANDS CHIFFRES`of 1872, perf with big numbers. Very nice accumulation, Stan and a little work with your Catalog.  I own only 2 Émission Cérès of 1848- so I am very jealous  Let me see if I note other series by going back to your scan and adding. René

@ renden I have a full 7 row stock page full of Ceres and another full of Napoleon, so a bit of work is before (plus I have other Ceres and Napoleon to be correctly identified)

@ renden I have a full 7 row stock page full of Ceres and another full of Napoleon, so a bit of work is before (plus I have other Ceres and Napoleon to be correctly identified)
I have brought Maury to work with me today to do some 'studying" (DURING BREAK TIME AND LUNCH OF COURSE... ) Well Stan stainlessb, I promised some help on the Semeuse Camée (Sower without ground under feet) and hope you will have a good time doing this Céres stuff but since you seem to have "dups" even though I would separate the shades and maybe put some in the "bath" I do not think you will have hard work with the ones scanned. I need to spend some time getting all of the other Ceres (and Napoleon) stamps into stock pages arranged in some form of order. This last lot was more on a whim as I did not expect to win -
but tonight I need to ready Sower for posting tomorrow!... so maybe later this week i will get everything in "one" place, now that the 4 corner penny red/plate pages are as fully loaded as I have and I can move on to something else (whilst keeping an eye out for those I lack, or I need a better specimen)
so many stamps... and not enough time

I've placed all (mostly all) 25c blue perforated Ceres into two stock sheets to begin the process of dividing into types, shades and anything else that I can determine. I have not noticed anything about yellowish paper, but I may have missed, or these may simply be stained (in which case they may get a bath, which has turned into a routine with myGB penny reds) And also, separate those with clear numerical obliterations as I think that may make for a nice page or two by itself  
If anything jumps out at anyone, please share your thoughts! Vive la France! |

here's what I have, and while the one on the left is much darker and more distinct = I believe it is still the early issue as it has a texture to the surface which would indicate typography printing= all three have a "texture" to their surface (and I may be mistaken, but from what i have read, this is one of the 'clues") I'm going with dark yellow brown (Spink|Maury 1b) for yours- unsure abou mine maybe all are bistre-jaune? but that's based on a limited number of actual specimens to look at

seems this thread could use a bump- Ceres 1849/50 issues and Bordeaux some are easy to tell as the denomination or color is specific to one Below the 20c black, 25c blue, andf 1Fr brown are easy to place- The 10c and 40c- I posted a couple of these right after receiving almost 1-1/2 year s ago (and I'll admit I haven't really looked at them much since) In the Bordeaux, there are some variations which are well detailed, but I find little information on how to properly ID the 10c bistre or the 40c orange. I did receive a small booklet "France obliterations" Jean Pothion, 1972 which does shed some light based on obliterations, such that I am inclined to believe the 10c left and par are Bordeaux issues due to the gross chiffre- the 10c on the right could potentially still be No1, it appears to have been double struck with a etoile-type obliteration, then again this could be a trimmed perforated stamp from the Siege de Paris issues. The 40c pair may be the early issues, but gross chiffre on the right stamp makes me think it is a Bordeaux issue. If anyone has more knowledge about these, please chime in. Part of a lot a received today along with other early stamps of France. There are arrows pointing at something on this small section and in most cases I'm not sure what? Two stamps are Type III, but of the 3 types for this stamp, it is them 2nd most common (Type II seem in short supply compare to Type I and II). On a couple I see an incomplete pattern in the border, and the letter C leaning.... but in the others, I'm not sure what the perceived variety is (how I wish there really was a way-back machine!) if you see the 'varietal deviation" (how's that for an explanation!?! sound some strange grape!, let me know  |

Below are all of the 10 c bistre imperf stamps I have. I am having difficulty deciding which is which... I "think" the leftmost stamp is #1 (1850), next is #43A (1870) followed by the single, pair and single with appear to be $43B (1871). Anyone with some knowledge of the differences (I know earliest is typography and later are lithography, but that's not helping mea great deal) Larger/single scans if needed any comments most welcome  |

What threw me off was the one in the middle lower, I don't think that's a Type III. The rightmost ones I'm thinking are Type III. These old eyes don't see a Type II in the lot. So that would leave the balance as Type I? |

@chriscross I agree, a few Type III and the rest Type I- I still haven't discovered what is being pointed out on some, but for now that's OK, They have been removed and soaked and loaded into the Vario pages with the others.
