My recent attempt to mount my Portuguese Ceres collection including the clichés,
Overall, I am pleased with the results and comfortable with the balance between stamp and supporting details with their illustrations.
If anyone has constructive critique or suggests for improvement, please do share...
Happy collecting!

Hey angore I'm just getting caught up on this thread and wanted to say how much I love where you're headed with your "One per country" album. I love the idea of some facts about the area and then space for each of the political entities in the space since stamps have been issued. It's how I like to think of my collection too, rather than grouping by colonial empires. I tend to prefer your second page layout the best (2 x 2 spaces with room for larger stamps) over the four long horizontal lines, but I know I wouldn't be able to decide until I had some stamps to mount on the pages, and then I'd change my mind a few more times!

I was thinking about the LaTeX discussions and while it is a complete mess in terms of work it does produce some pleasing results on occasion. Here is an example of a Topical Page I came up with (I need to start using them and get my collections out of varios, envelopes and other storage media).
...
What excellent pages thanks for sharing them.
When I see something different that I like, such as these pages, I often try to recreate them in AlbumEasy to see if is practical.
A quick question, is the grid part of the pre-printed page or is it generated by LaTex? Thanks, Clive

I'm attempting to install Jekyll - needs command line tools. Time to download: 36 hours 31 minutes 45 seconds! Good grief, and here I am with 90 mbps! But a couple minutes later, it's done! Apple's initial estimates are completely out of whack! I'll see what I can do with this thing...
Thanks Alyn (iswscwebmaster ) although I have no web space ATM other than WordPress which has sat stagnant pretty much since I was last in Alert, now 11 years ago!

stanley64 very nice Cape Verde page only critique I have is perhaps have a little line next to each flaw saying what the flaw is. The middle one on your page I couldn't see the flaw very clearly in your greyscale image, guessing a blob on Ceres' face? So a little one line text stating the flaw might be helpful

Hi brightonpete, Jekyll is good at static site generation and the fact that it is "blog aware" is awesome. I liked WordPress but the performance of Jekyll is great. I am also toying with Hugo. All the best

The grid in the background was done by LaTeX, using the TikZ package. I would love to see AlbumEasy be able to print a grid on a page. I don't normally like to use features that are not yet in a public release, but I recently added quadrilles or grids to AE which will be part of the next release. Grids may be defined to cover the whole or only part of the page, the line colours can be specified. Major lines, i.e thicker grid lines, can be placed every specified number of blocks apart.
When testing, It is always useful to try and create real-world examples, so here is what I came up with when trying to duplicate your page:
It was only a quick approximation, so I guessed font sizes and spacing, and my aeroplane image is not very good. One difference is that the grid does not extend down into the bottom margin, that is because the pages footer is drawn before the grid, which would result in the grid lines appearing over the footer text.
This is the complete AlbumEasy file used to generate that page:
ALBUM_PAGES_SIZE (215.9 279.4) ALBUM_PAGES_MARGINS (10.0 10.0 10.0 10.0) ALBUM_PAGES_SPACING (0.0 0.0)
ALBUM_PAGES_FOOTER (TN 12 R "© abcdefgh.com") COLOUR_PAGE_QUADRILLE($F3F3F3)
PAGE_START PAGE_VSPACE(1.5) PAGE_QUADRILLE(0.5 4.0 4.0 CENTRE)
PAGE_VSPACE(-260.0) PAGE_TEXT(TN 32 "Airplanes on Stamps")
PAGE_COLUMN_START(40 8.0 12.0 0.0 10.0) ROW_START_ES (HN 6 0.1) STAMP_ADD_IMG( 60.0 80.0 "airplane.png" "" "" "" NO_FRAME)
PAGE_COLUMN_NEXT PAGE_RULE_H(0.1 0.0 15.5 0.0 ) PAGE_TEXT_RIGHT(TN 20 "Airplane 100" 10.0) PAGE_TEXT_PARAGRAPH_START(TN 11 JUSTIFIED) Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco.\n\n Some more text goes here\n\n Length: 100'\n Wingspan: 120' 6"\n Height: 50'\n Ceiling: 41'\n\n\n Range: 3,500Km to 4,000Km\n Speed: Deadly slow PAGE_TEXT_PARAGRAPH_END
PAGE_COLUMN_STOP I have never used LaTex, but I would be interested to know how it compares.
Thanks, Clive

Secondly, whenever I see such lovely pages as classicalstamps makes, I want to emulate those but I then have to slap myself from jumping right into such gorgeous layouts.
Go for it! Give it a try! Once you try the "storytelling" there is no turning back, though I love Affinity Publisher, too. I used to work in Apple Pages, which is also great, but Affinity takes it to the next level.

Although I don't use AE myself, this is truly great news. After blaamand introduced me to "quadrille" sections some years ago, it has transformed my album pages. Perfect for varieties, expensive or weird stuff you might never get. I also use it for "representative collecting", e.g. there are perhaps 5 stamps in a series with the same variety where I just want to collect a few: Or postmark collecting where you get items on pieces:

And based on your code it is far easier for the user than the equivalent in LaTeX which looks like this: \documentclass[letterpaper,10pt]{article} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage[right=.75in, bottom=.75in, top=.95in, left=.75in]{geometry} \usepackage{fancyhdr} \usepackage{xfrac} \usepackage{parskip} \usepackage{tikz} \usepackage{background} \usepackage{graphicx}

One app I used to use to design my album pages is "Graphic." It is still available at the Mac App Store and for iOS, although I think the developers have given up on it. It's awful for text, but doable. You can create a customized grid quite easily. I rarely printed the grid as I made boxes for all the stamps. But I'll give it a go and see if it does print edge to edge. Print grid with inkjet, then the rest on laser...

Hmmm, I found the 600 dpi printed out very light on my inkjet and dirty on my laser. I made a PDF of a grid 14.78 pixels wide, which filled the screen side to side pretty well, half a grid box at the bottom. It printed cleanly on my laser at 72 dpi. But neither printer will print edge to edge. But it looks OK to me. I'll just add a surround frame to the page and that'll be it for me.
Not sure how it'll be on other computers, but here it is, without the outer frame...

If I was going to learn LaTex one should invest in an editor that assists with entering commands. There are editors that have macros to assist with all the syntax in what these character command structure.
There was a poster on SCF (a forum) that did something for AE for Notepad++. I have the software but his macro supports a very old version of AE.
I have used EditPad+ so you can save commands in a clipboard to just paste repetitive information that you could tailor.

And the AlbumEasy code that generated the page: Ha! I tried this, clivel but no go. So this must be an un-released version of AE, or I need to update my version!
I too like classicalstamps suggestion for a border around the grid!

This is perhaps off-topic for this thread, but here's another feature suggestion for AE: The possibility to add a border around the quadrille section: Actually, the current implementation supports both a border as well as major grid-lines - either or both are optional. The colour is configurable as well.
The AlbumEasy code that created that grid:
PAGE_QUADRILLE(0.25 5.0 5.0 CENTRE 1.25 80.0 60.0 0.75 4)
This creates a 5.0mm X 5.0mm grid with 0.25mm thick lines. The grid is centred horizontally on the page with a 1.25mm thick border. The grid is 80.0mm wide, 60mm high, with 0.75mm thick major lines every 4 blocks
The odd sequence of parameters is because only the first three are mandatory - the grid line thickness and the horizontal and vertical grid cell sizes.

Having finished updating Singapore listings at Colnect to reflect listings in the Specialized ISC/Tan catalogue, I have now gone back to making pages for my Canada collection. Finished Volume I, which ended with George V's reign in 1935, so now volume II starts with one of my favorite issues of Canada ever - the MUFTIs!!! Have finished the first three pages, which completes the Muftis and up to the Royal Visit of 1939. As usual I try to go as strict chronological as possible, so Special Delivery and 5-Hole OHMS perfins are mixed in. According to Gibbons, the 4-Hole OHMS Perfins only begin on 1 July 1939, so that will be the next section to work on.

Next batch of pages done for my Canada Album volume 2. This section runs from the introduction of Small, 4-hole H OHMS perfins in July 1939 to the end of 1947 - all the War and almost all the Peace issues covered.
Still have 10 days off work as my foot recuperates so gonna make the best use of it while I can and try to crank out a whole bunch of Canada pages. I think I can get to the end of 1966 in volume 2, and then start volume 3 with the Centennial Definitives, but will have to see ow things evolve.

On a roll now. Tonight took me from 1948 to the end of 1953, with the Wilding George VI and Karsh Elizabeth II series done, as well as the transition from Perforated OHMS to Overprint OHMS to Overprint G. Up to 17 pages for Volume II
Now to brace myself for starting the more complicated Elizabeth II definitive series, with the Wildings up next, and the need to start including spaces for all the various UV reaction variants that start coming at this time.

Now up to the start of 1962 - the Wildings are all set up. Up to 26 pages now, and ready to move on to the Cameos. Might actually get to start working on the Centennial Definitives in all their permutations this week at this rate.
