Guernsey! What are you doing? 12 stamps and a souvenir sheet for postal independence? 7 for Christmas?
No wonder people stop collecting when deluges like this are issued!

Guernsey! What are you doing? 12 stamps and a souvenir sheet for postal independence? 7 for Christmas? No wonder people stop collecting when deluges like this are issued! It is important to let people collect whatever they like without judgment. If it makes them happy, then more power to them. There must be enough people who also enjoy these because they keep issuing them. Actually if you consider that each of the stamps in the sets pay the rate for different zones or classes, then each new rate only gets a new stamp every other month, or maybe a half dozen per year. Personally I prefer fewer issues, too, but this isn’t as bad as some other postal entities.

I like the USPS issuing policy where most stamps in commemorative sets usually have the same denomination. Canada has also been good about this.
I have many British colonies that issues sets but in all different denominations and higher value ones are not easy to find. I got a mixture in once and it only had the lowest two denominations of say a 4 to 5 stamps set for many sets.

I would like to add a thread showing recent Guernsey (and elsewhere, Alderney) issues, starting with those issued this year. Why do they need face values that vary by only 1p? Many of these sets have both 65p and 66p stamps (or 62p & 63p in the earlier issues) - what postal zones do they have which have such a narrow difference in postage costs? And I like those Year of the Pig stamps very much! Ryan

“Why do they need face values that vary by only 1p? “ Ryan Ryan that is a REALLY good question. They would probably save money and confusion and streamline operations by having fewer rates.

I assumed it was just to get more income from stamp collectors. There was never a postal need and doubt you could buy them easily at a post office.

Guernsey postage rates are structured in accordance with UPU guidelines, increases are regulated. The standard letter rate within the island is 48p, the large letter (less than 100g) rate is 66p. The 65p rate covers a standard letter to UK. So there is a postal need, unless you are happy with Guernsey Post overcharging by 1p to reduce the range of single stamps required. Incidentally the 80p rate meets the need to send letters (<20g) to the EU; 90p gets a standard letter (<20g) to destinations outside the EU; 98p rate covers large letters (<100g) to UK. There is also a reduced rate for Christmas cards, last year it was 43p. link to postal rates www.guernseypost.com/sites/default/files/uploads/Postal%20Rates%20A5%20leaflet%202019_1.pdfI have never seen a forum for stamp collectors where collectors complain about the variety of stamps being issued, so I guess some would prefer a single design covering a range of destinations/mail item dimensions where some combinations are overcharged to the highest rate covered. If so, best ask for a generic "Horizon" label issued at the post office where the design is constant but the price paid is the only variant.
At least Guernsey Post hasn't copied other issuing agencies, such as Royal Mail which sees fit to issue two or more of each face value in commemorative sets and uses first and second class designations which have little relevance to most mail users.
These denominations also make it difficult to calculate make-up values when using first or second class stamps for overseas or large items. I stopped collecting GB stamps in 2016 after multiple issues of 10 different 1st class stamps (Comedians, Star Wars, Shakespeare, Mr Men).

Guernsey 21st January 2020 250th Anniversary of birth of Ludwig van Beethoven Designed - The Potting Shed Printed - bpost That's one unhappy looking Beethoven. I've walked by it in Bonn and didn't think to remark on it, maybe because it's very tall and fithy; a pigeon roost. Here it looks like the avenging Golem. What was somebody thinking on Guernsey?

Hi Kasvik, not sure what the thinking was in choosing this particular version of Beethoven's image - perhaps they were looking for something original? The good news (?) is that Guernsey Post intend to issue three more stamps this year - on 2nd May, 21st July and 28th October - to mark Beethoven's 250th birth anniversary.
I don't know if the designs have been frozen yet - if not perhaps you can suggest a better representation, preferably one that hasn't been used before?
Anyway - it was designed in "The Potting Shed"![thepottingsheddesign.com - the Beethoven stamp is not shown among the designs produced for Guernsey Post....]
