I don't know about "warm feelings" but if mine came apart I think I'd have a stroke!

By the way, Your pictures of your electronics gave me a warm feeling. When I worked in aerospace a lot of stuff looked like that. When one sees the 3 dimensional mess on a workbench, one has to wonder how we got to the moon Jerry B Yeah, well, I used to do work like I have in my pictures, on the aircraft, but nowadays we aren't allowed to take hardly anything apart. The new FAA rules have our hands so tied when it comes to vendor parts, that I am not allowed to take anything apart. We used to take apart backlit panels, and replace light bulbs all the time, or re-solder the circuit boards that had come apart. Now, they make us replace the entire panel, which is just stupid. But what they don't know, doesn't hurt me. LOL. My brain is wired to troubleshoot and fix things, that is what I do. That is why I have it in my head, that I have to figure out the different colors with the Signascope. I can't stop thinking about something until I fix it. This is why I love working on airplanes, there is always something that needs to be figured out.

Hi Mike
One reason I thought of going back to Electronics Engineering before I retired. I like the idea of designing hardware and making it work. Since you work on Aircraft, you'll like this. We installed a new nav system on a C54 for testing. The company made a lot of changes to the system. To save a few bucks the case was left alone. To originally connect the avionics there were the monster 120 pin connectors (mil type) of which only 10 or so pins were used after the modifications. So that the wires used did not break from the pins, we ran about 60 to 70 additional dummy wires. The military inspector, a 2nd lieutenant, went ballistics over the dummy wires. He had his people cut them out of the connecting cable. On the test flight some of the wires broke loose. The inspector got into trouble and, probably, was transferred to some remote air base. Those connectors were heavy and 10 or so #22 wires was too little.

Hi
It seems that the colors did do some good on the Detectamark. It may be my old eyes, but even though the colors helped, it still seems that the results are similar no matter what the color.
cjoprey: You said you used a single brightness setting. What do you get when you change brightness, using blue for instance?

Although to my eyes it was still visible, the camera seems to have made it look worse. I've played with several stamps now and there are some that show best on low brightness with white light, and some (for me anyway) are easiest with the pink light on high brightness. I suspect it's more to do with my eyesight than anything though.

Hi cjoprey
Didn't do a heck of lot did it. It seems that the original brightness was best.

Indeed Jerry B - having played with it some more during the day it's been a little random, especially with some of the Indian stamps. Admittedly some of those looked like they'd been thinned and might have lost any watermark they once showed. Overall though it's allowed me to catalogue a bunch more stamps which I couldn't figure out before, so I'm pleased with it. (and I don't really want to mess with fluids if I can help it )

Unfortunately, that is what our new engineers, (young millenials), are doing to us, just to save weight on the aircraft, and time for them. It is getting ridiculous. But we make it work by filling the connectors with RTV.

TI (Texas Instrument) web site has RGB Leds and controllers for it. Boy these things are cheap, in my day they would have cost in the hundreds. Transistors were $5 to $100 for a power transistor, not even mil spec. Jerry B I ordered a new RGB light with controller that should be here today or tomorrow. I am going to install it in the Signascope T1, to see if it is as good as the Stanley Gibbons Detectamark. The only thing that is better with the Signascope T1, is that you can tighten better than the T2, and it it looks like the Detectamark is also not able to tighten as much. When I use my T2, I tighten it as much as possible with the knob and still can't see hte watermark sometimes, but I can see the watermark with the T1, since it can smash the stamp more. I know I am going to give in and buy the Stanley Gibbons eventually, just because, I now want to know the difference. LOL.

Hi Mike Once you play around with the RGB LED and controller, you may not want to buy the SG unit. You will probably end up with a T1 that is equal to or better than SG Dectamark. So, try to package the "development" electronics. You'll probably have to lose the tongs buss bar . I believe I read that some of the TI controllers have input pins for color and brightness. Jerry B

The only thing I have a problem with is the power, it is going to be 12 volts, so I will have to use specialty batteries, which I have, but some people won't like it. I will be using the same power supply jack though. I hope this works. Parts came in yesterday but didn't have time to work on it yet.

Hi Mike OK, my electronics background is coming into play. Here are some 5 volt dc regulators. Looking around you might find one with 110v ac in to 5-? volts dc out. Jerry B Well, I am trying to do this so that anyone could easily duplicate it. I actually found a small 12 volt light that has a remote with it. I have it installed, but don't have a good stamp to try yet. I ordered the Mexican stamp you listed earlier. Got it for $1.50 on Ebay, so it will be here in a day or so. The controller has 16 colors and dims really nicely. I will post some pictures soon, but it looks pretty good so far.

Hi Mike
If it works well, why not package it, similar to a DC adapter, and sell the thing. There are probably a lot of Signoscopes out there, and you might as well make a buck.
It shows my age, but this stuff is really inexpensive. In my aerospace engineer days we tried to shy away from TI and go with Fairchild and Signetics (I think I still have chips that are yours if I can find them and you want them). TI's IC pin designations were not standard. You would have liked those days. Everything had to be designed from scratch.
BTW: What's your background, other than wiring avionics? You are doing fantastic with this.

BTW: What's your background, other than wiring avionics? You are doing fantastic with this. Jerry B I am an Avionics Tech. Started working on AV8A Harriers in the Marine Corps in 1981, upgraded to AV8B harriers, then got out in 1989. Went to work at Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah, Ga in '89. Still there. I used to get to do a lot of R&D with our engineers, but not so much anymore. They still call me when they need something special done. I work in Completion Center, which is where we put the interiors in the righ people's jets. So, I have been the one who has tested everything that we have installed for 30 years now. I have to make it all work, which is what I like to do.
This is so easy compared to what I have done before. I can update a T1 Signascope for about $10-12 with a remote controlled multi-color light that is a 30 minute job for someone who doesn't know what they are doing. I can do it in 10 minutes or less. That price includes a new power supply, because the light is 12 VDC. I haven't tried this on my T2 Signascope yet, but I have the parts for when I get time to do it. When I get this all ironed out to perfection, I will offer the design to anyone who wants to buy the parts for themselves, or I may even put it all together, as a retrofit for those who don't want to attempt to do it themselves. I'm not in it to make the money, I just enjoy the challenge.

Hi Mike
You should have used VA benefits and have gotten an BSEE. I started as a electronics tech (USAF electronics training) and finally became an engineer with an MSEE. Then the bottom dropped out of aerospace. I then went from designing digital electronics to computers. Wow, what a difference, I had a job for more than a few weeks. Much different than aerospace with its "here today, gone tomorrow" environment. Once had 3 jobs in 2 months and worked on the same equipment at each job!. Each company got a contract for the equipment when the other company lost it (difficult to explain the aerospace environment, you had to be there). I think the retrofit idea is the best way. The majority of people will not have the tech skills that you have.

I will make some retrofits, just to help people out that have a signascope.

Well, I finally had a chance to try out the new Multi-Color Light I put in the T1 Signascope. I am using a MNH Mexico (Scott) #863 to test with. The color controller has White plus 15 different colors and it has Bright to Dim functions. It also has a flashing mode, which actually seems to help see the watermark a little better, on some colors. I am showing you only the 4 colors which seem to be the best. It is really hard to take these pictures, as the colors want to wipe out the picture, when taken too close. I can see the watermark much better than any of the pictures actually show. I have taken pictures in Full Bright and Full Dim, just for comparison. I think the Purple shows the watermark the best of all.
I am going to leave this multi-color bulb in my T1 Signascope, because it does seem to help on certain stamps, and I may even put one in my T2 Signascope next.
