The Pan-American Exposition was held in Buffalo, New York, from May 1st to November 2nd, 1901. It was most noted for its use of electricity, which allowed the fairgrounds and attractions to be illuminated at night. The source of the electric was a hydro-electric plant with power generated by Niagara Falls. The exposition was also the location where President William McKinley was assassinated.

This one was perfect for me, someone writing back to Pforzheim from the Pan-American Exposition. It's suffered, and the cancel is decent, but it's the embossed and printed cache that got my attention. I had not seen that before. This was one of the official designs. It is quite clever--and much clearer as drawn than as reproduced here--but too detailed for easy reproduction. They had another, but that was too ethereal for comment.
What the historical site makes clear--and I didn't appreciate--is the event was something of a bust. The only foreign pavilion was Canada. So much for 'Pan-American'. Maybe the rest of the New World was still too freaked/cautious by the Spanish-American War. Even if a Pforzheimer was there, attendance was low. If not for the stamps and killing President McKinley, I suspect it would be forgotten.
What about the postage? Two cents was normal domestic. International was five. No sign of postage due. The back shows enough of the envelope cut away to account for a missing stamp. Maybe a collector removed a desirable three cent stamp or tidied a ragged edge.
