Robert WERT - both stamps (Scott # 53 10c carmine and # 55 25c blue green) are listed as "embossed" - In one of my catalogs, the 25c is also listed as Sc #55b Dbl embossed, one inverted ?? René

Yes these are embossed with an oval containing the white cross of the Swiss coat of arms as on the shield held by the female representation of Helvetia.

I know this is an old thread, but I think we are confusing the watermark with the embossing. All of the sitting Helvatia stamps of both designs are lightly embossed. Given their age, this is most easily detected on the shield at Helvatia's side. The oval you have marked on the 25c green stamp is the watermark. Scott identifies this as watermark 182 and gives this note at the head of the section: "Watermark 182 is not a true watermark, having been impressed after the paper was manufactured." So it could easily be confused with embossing. This stamp could be either of two issues. Scott 55 is a 25c blue green stamp on white paper, from the 1867-78 set. Scott 65 is a 25c green on granite paper from the 1881 set. Both are more common unused than used.
