I have a pretty good idea of how i want to proceed, but i'm curious if and how anyone else has approached this. I'm beginning a process of eliminating countries from my stock of stamps (I'll probably make some available in the near future). I collect Great Britain, and i think i want keep anythjng related to Britain. I'm starting with any countries with EII's profile or ER logo. Maybe include the countries from the coronation omnibus set i started. Any other suggestons from anyone? Ultimately, i think i'm going to keep United States, Canada, Great Britain and whatever i else i decide to expand that to, France, and Russia/USSR. Plus any assorted stamps that i just like. Other countries are going to be traded, sold, or given away, i think, to anyone that will appreciate them more.
So, what say you about British 'commonwealth'?

My chequered collecting history began WW then excluded most of the rest of the world as I moved to Commonwealth countries for many years . By the 1980s it became apparent that the newly independent states were in the hands of philatelic Agencies intent on squeezing as many bucks as possible with vast numbers of issues most of which only nominally served a postal purpose . I think of Sierra Leone, st Vincent , and then a raft of tiny individual islands , Tuvalu ,Anguilla, grenadines etc. which would have sunk under the weight of paper had all their stamps actually ever been on the island.
The post millennium Commonwealth issues are vast. I have reduced my interests to half a dozen only .Australia is an active area you should consider .
That said British Commonwealth is a good and popular collecting area if you set target limits and do not try to collect all. Britain’s currency went decimal in1972 and as a cut off for many that and emerging independence for colonies for many is useful . With this in mind Stanley Gibbons has a dedicated catalogue exclusively Commonwealth 1840-1970 issued each year it is essential for this area and period . Second hand should be easily affordable.
Slightly later and no longer published there was a simplified SG Commonwealth catalogue which listed all up to about 2005useful for mor recent issues without details of warematk and perforation variations. Out of print but we’ll worth looking for. My copy is 2007.

I collect British Commonwealth (KGV to 1980) and willing to purchase any needed stamps (prefer lots, not one by one). I have lots of gaps.

I buy and sell British Colony stamps, so if you have good quality stamps for sale, please feel free to contact me. Also if you are looking for anything to fill in gaps, I have over 38,000 stamps listed on my web site covering all time periods. The site does not have pictures of stamps, but everything is listed by Gibbons and Scott numbers. You just select the Order button next to any of the listings and when you are done it is sent to me. I scan all the stamps and email you the scan - all before you commit to buy. KGVIStamps Home Page

I have an unwanted SG Commonwealth catalogue from 2005 in good condition. (I think it may be in two parts). Hardback. Problem is the postage costs will be horrendous. But if it's cheaper than buying one it is available for FREE.
I also have a nice Commonwealth collection that I have been selling but my stamps have lain dormant recently so will get back to it. I posted some here a few months ago and will do so again. If anyone has any wants, I can check them out. Details to come.

So called "PART 1" for historic reasons, re issued and updated every year ………………………(Part 2 was the old Europe catalogue and Part 3 was Overseas these no longer exist) There is a Soft Cover Commonwealth Simplified around with stamps 1840- 2007 which is no longer published but I have seen on ebay variously between £8 and £24

daveg28.......Yes, it's free but I'll need the postage costs plus paypal fee. My previous message gives an idea of costs, that was to Canada. I can check for any other destination. I need to check again to see if it is in two parts because i have based my price on that. I can check tomorrow as the catalogues are in my lock-up.

I don’t think the Commonwealth was ever more than a single volume until the sectional catalogues , North America, Australia, Western Pacific, etc came out in the post 2000 era

That is more likely. In which case the postage will be less. I'll take a picture tomorrow for anyone interested.

So I made a mistake about the Catalogues. Well, a slight one I have 2 hardback catalogues for the British Commonwealth as I previously stated, but they are from the year 2000, not 2005. I also have a copy of the simplified, mentioned by vikingeck, this one is from 1999. The former are GB & A-I Volume 1 and J-Z Volume 2.
