In 1919 following the collapse of Tsarist Russia, and the withdrawal of German troops from the east, the Baltic states declared independence. Latvia needed stamps but there was a shortage of paper. The retreating German army left piles of maps printed on one side of the paper, Latvia used the blank side to print stamps . Turn them over and you have the "MAP BACK ISSUES" The stamps are found both perforated and imperf

I don't know if this is by chance or you saw a recent post in a facebook group "stamps collectors", but take a look a these photos. A guy posted it yesterday. It took my breath away.

Anyway there are two whole sheets on eBay Latvia map backs for sale right now, one imperf and one perf for $125- $ 137.50

Wow that is freaking awesome! What an historical gem! I’ve heard about the maps before, but never seen this large a piece.

This issue has been well studied, down to the number of different maps used for the paper - I have this booklet on my shelf. Cheaper than buying a full sheet but correspondingly less cool .... oh well! Ryan
