Hi all, I hope this post is acceptable. I've been trying to work out the links between the multitude of different names we see on East African stamps - and started putting together a chart for myself. I realized this might be of interest to others, so decided to share it on here. Please be aware this is a work in progress, and may well have inaccuracies on it. Enjoy! Chris edit: Updated chart as I spotted some errors... edit again: Updated with details from comments on this thread.

Thanks Vince ( stanley64)! I've updated the chart in the original email with your details, and reconfirmed some more bits from Michel as well. I will treat Mozambique as still continuing - it is my understanding that the 1951 cut-off is for the "Mozambique district" stamps, after which it became just Mozambique again.

I treat Zanzibar-Tanzania as a distinct entity.
French Offices in Zanzibar is another one.
Belgian Occupation of German Africa became Ruanda-Urundi.
Mafia Island was a short-lived WWI occupation zone. Overprints are rare and mostly dubious.

Very nice - I don't see Nyasaland/Malawi in there? I would consider that to be part of East Africa, given that you are including Mozambique.

I specifically tried to stick to listing "labeled" countries as seen on the stamps, so have added Belgian Occupied GEA and Mafia (which I knew about but forgot to add! ). I'm aware of India, French and German post offices in Zanzibar, but have ignored them as they all had either cancellation stamps or overprints indicating Zanzibar. Could you explain more about the Zanzibar-Tanzania as a separate entity? I'm not aware of this as a labeled country. Thanks! Chris.

Hi gmot - I will look at putting together another one of these for "central Africa" which links Nyasaland, Malawi, the Rhodesias, etc... The only reason Mozambique is on this one is because it is linked to East Africa through the Kionga triangle. I try to only list the countries that are linked together.

Stamps labeled Zanzibar-Tanzania were used on the island after the merger with Tanganyika. There is also the Republic of Zanzibar between the overthrow of the Sultan and the merger.
I am curious as to Lamu. What was it and were stamps issued with that name? Quick googling tells me that Germany had a post office there and so it is postmark I should look for.

greaden - For Lamu I believe they issued German stamps in the local post office prior to the establishment of GEA. I got this bit of info from Wikipedia: "German postal services in German East Africa started on October 4, 1890. However, prior to the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty German postal offices were briefly in operation at Lamu (November 22, 1888 to March 31, 1891) and Zanzibar (August 27, 1890 to July 31, 1891). Initially, definite German stamps were used." I also found this nice resource: www.pvoller.net/stamps/germany/1888-east-africa.php

thank you for this wonderful overview of the history of African regions. It is a real puzzle for me too know what region or period some stamps are from.
