Wetland habitats for ducks and other migratory waterfowl are under pressure worldwide. The U.S. Department of the Interior reported in a 1990 publication that over half of Australia's wetlands had vanished since European settlement in the 18th century. At the time of that report, the U.S. and Australia were cooperating to preserve and restore those resources. In 1989, Australia initiated its first duck stamp and established a wetlands conservation program within the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service (ANPWS). The Australian Wildlife Fund, a non-profit dedicated to funding conservation programs, sponsored the "First of Nation" Australian duck stamp. The stamp, featuring plumed whistling ducks, was designed by Dan Smith, the designer of the 1989-90 U.S. duck stamp (Scott RW56). Shown below is the 1990-91 ANPWS duck stamp featuring chestnut teals. The stamp was designed by Jim Hautman, the artist for the 1990-91 U.S. duck stamp (Scott RW57).

Kakadu, the largest national park in Australia (approx. 20,000 square kilometers), is Aboriginal land. Shown below is the 1993-4 wetlands conservation stamp, featuring Australian wood ducks, on a multi-part park use ticket with a Kakadu first day of issue cancellation dated July 1, 1993. The missing left marginal tab would have had the ticket number, C 04867, printed vertically with the tops of the letter and numbers being closest to the perforations.
