Hi! I want to check with all of you about who was the first citizen of USA depicted on a postage stamp, while he (I guess not a she) was alive? Let's determine if he was featured on a USPS stamp, and who else (from USA, that is) was featured on early stamps of other countries. Let's distinguish between featuring as himself (clearly, not in a cosmonaut helmet and suit), or in a historical photo (i.e. Battle of Iwo-Jima monument), or as a character (i.e. Harrison Ford as Captain Han Solo), etc. Also, who was the first person from USA featured on a stamp, even if he was already dead? Posthumously. Thank you!

Also, who was the first person from USA featured on a stamp, even if he was already dead? Posthumously. I assume it doesn't have to be a commemorative (i.e., definitives are OK). If we restrict ourselves to national issues, then it would be Benjamin Franklin on Scott US #1(1Jul1847) and George Washington on Scott US #2(1Jul1847). The latter actually has an older Earliest Known Use date for used stamps: US #1(EKU=7Jul1847), US #2(EKU=2Jul1847).

OK, Franklin in 1847, posthumously. Yes, it doesn't matter to me now if the stamps are definitives [nothing in our Universe is really definitive...maybe...] or commemoratives.

Jefferson Davis appeared while still alive on the first Confederate States of America stamp in 1861. Whether he was still considered a US citizen at the time is a technicality that I don't know the answer to (I think maybe it is 1865 when he was stripped of his rights to run for office, although he was never formally tried for treason). However, his citizenship was restored posthumously in 1978.

The 9/11 stamp was an actual image of living person but again the person was not being commemorated.
As an aside I was listening to an old radio show that was a take off on the Quiz Kids that mocked the honesty of quiz shows. When the contestant was told the answer was Lincoln (but question was about living people), the response was Lincoln lives in the heart of all of us.

In Scott C10 from 1927, we see the last name LINDBERGH mentioned. He died in 1974. His face is unrecognizable in the small stamp, of course. link

As far as I know, that is correct. I haven't collected modern US stamps in awhile, so I can't say for certain since USPS changed the "living person" rule last decade. Of course, the name Elvis Presley appears on his 1993 commemorative, and there's still people claiming to have seen Elvis still alive.

Let's expand the question: Who is the first living American (clearly identifiable, not in a cosmonaut suit, etc.) to appear on a USPS stamp, or on customized postage, or on a stamp from any other country, having his full name printed out on that stamp (not just the portrait)? Could David Mann be the first living American (clearly identifiable, not in a cosmonaut suit, etc.) to appear on a USPS stamp, or on customized postage , or on a stamp from any other country, having his full name printed out on that stamp (not just the portrait)? Could his painting's signature be considered legible enough to say "David Mann"? When did that personalized stamp from Pitney Bowes appear, to be postmarked on March 9, 2007?
