During 1939, a special mail delivery to Toga occurred by tossing over the side of ships tin cans full of mail. The natives rowed out to meet the ships, collected the floating tin cans, rowed back, and then delivered the mail. This cover also belongs to my wife's great grandfathers' collection.

Beginning of Tin Can Mail Early Trials (1882 1902)
In 1882, Trader William Travers was said to arrange with Tongan Postal Officials to use kerosene cans or biscuit tins as mail “bags” in the transit of mail from the island to passing steamers and vice versa. But according to my original study by newspapers in 1890s, “Rocket mail from ship” had usually been tried for inward mail and resulted very unsatisfactory. Outward mail was suppose to be carried by native swimmer by Tin Can Mail manner. It is the Earliest recorded letter sent from NIUAFOQOU and also the only cover in 19th century before Tonga became a protected state under a Treaty of Friendship with Britain on 18 May 1900. Inward (Arrival) Mail to the Island was shot by Rocket mail in this period, but as it is outward, so supposed to be carried by Native Swimmer, same as the usual Outward Tin Can Mail manner.

Great video kostia84 , thanks for posting. Here are the 4 stamps from Niuafoʻou (meaning many new coconuts) depicting Tin Can Mail and Rocket Mail, printed by The House of Questa and issued in 1986, SG 85-88. Followed by my Tin Can Mail cover from 11th August 1938, shown front and back with multiple hand-stamps and a Toga/Tonga stamp. Finally, a set of pairs of stamps depicting the short-lived Rocket Mail issued in 1985, SG 60B, 61A, 62B and 63A. Self-adhesives produced by Walsall Security Printers with interesting progressive proofs running down the middle of the sheet. What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I remember when I first found this 1938 Tonga Tin Can Mail cover I thought it was unique. It was part of a large box of estate items at a stamp auction. Of course upon research I found they are not all that unique. I kept it anyway. It was nice that there were a couple articles from the same era with it plus a note still inside with direction for delivery. Nice to have a 1938 Brampton post mark on the back and the note inside This article would appear to be from 1946 when the island of Niuafo'ou was evacuated.
