What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

All right, Jeff ( JeffS ), in the spirit of a challenge, I have not done any searching as you have proposed! Here is my guess: I am wondering if the butterfly either develops in cocoons that are commonly found in orange trees, or if the beast either loves to eat oranges itself, or eats other kinds of insects that infest orange trees.... OK, those are my rambling guesses. I look forward to see your response! I am curious, but I will wait to see, and promise not to search in the meantime.

I'll play along as well and suggest that the butterfly belongs in your Oranges Philately Collection because this particular species is of the edible variety and tastes like oranges :-)
Alternatively, for anyone that has visited a butterfly sanctuary like this one is San Jose, Costa Rica ( Spirogyra Butterfly Garden), you know that orange halves are placed throughout the gardens as a food source for the butterflies with their juices and hence the link or connection to your collection.
Happy collecting!

Without doing a search, can anyone say why I would include this butterfly stamp in my Oranges Philately collection? Well, as an immediate guess I would say that's a pollinator. I don't often think of butterflies as being pollinators but I recall a US stamp series of pollinators which included a butterfly (and a bat, too!). Ryan

Wrapping up my South Africa section category of National Symbolism. Keep in mind this is not intended to be a comprehensive study or accumulation of every stamp possible. My collection has varying aspects of Thematics, Traditional and Postal History, as well as stamp collecting.

Ryan stanley64 @beryllium Guy Regarding my butterfly question, this is one of a few with differing Latin names commonly referred to as Citrus Butterflies. When their eggs are laid on the citrus leaves, when maturing at the larvae stage, they dine on the leaves. They have been known to strip a tree of all its leaves and raise havoc within the orchard. Quite destructive. Looks like Beryllium Guy got the closest.

I have an example and the fragrance is quite weak. What about yours? Yes, the fragrance is weak on mine as well, but still discernible. The scented stamps from this series (and other such series in France and French Territories) only last 6 months to a few years if the stamp is exposed to air.

Jaffa oranges = Jaffa Cakes! YUM I see on that Wikipedia article that the term "Jaffa Cakes" was never trademarked so there are many manufacturers out there apart from the original British snacks, which clears up the mystery as to why the Jaffa Cakes I can buy here come from Bosnia Serbia, of all places ... no matter, they're still tasty and I ate an entire package with my tea last night. YUM again (Correction made as I'm eating another package tonight ....) Ryan

Hi JeffS That is a nice thematic display . As a fellow enthusiast for "telling a story" I really appreciate the diversity of your pages and going out of the box with a medal and some nice postal history . I found I wanted to use postcards and the like in my " "Counterblaste to Tobacco" exhibit only to be told that some of it did not fit the strict thematic exhibiting rules . So was I delighted when the great powers of international exhibiting decided on a class called Open Philately or Social philately where up to 40% of non stamp material can be included. Great stuff . You probably have thought some of the following left of field connections , but how about 1 The Royal house of Orange , the Dutch royal family , 2 King William of Orange who was chosen for the British Throne in 1688 when James VII was deposed . 3 The Ulster Irish "Loyal Orange Order " who celebrate King William's Victory at the Battle of the Boyne 1688 every 12th July with marching parades 4 The Dutch national football (soccer) team plays in Orange shirts 5 The Orange free state issues of South Africa before the 1910 Union 6 The town of Orange in France appears on at least one stamp I could go on …………………………….Nice

vikingeck Thank you for our post and suggestions. For Orange Free State etc, I did post some pages early in this thread. I am trying to focus on the fruit itself and not "Oranges" that have nothing to do with the citrus. I am really enjoying this collection without the angst of exhibiting rules and protocols. While it does contain elements of postal history, traditional, thematic, postal stationery, post cards and social elements, it would suffer greatly in the frames, and I'm afraid would diminish my enthusiasm for it. ") Keep watching and posting!

Ryan - I guess I now must find out about Jaffa cakes! An exceedingly important point, as taken from the notes on the legal case surrounding the VAT status of Jaffa Cakes in the UK: "The product hardens when stale, in the manner of a cake." Therefore, I always EAT THE ENTIRE PACKAGE IN ONE SITTING when I have some. I made the sad mistake one time of only eating half of them, leaving the second helping for the next night, and was very sad at the dry state of my cakes that second evening. Also, those Serbian knock-offs I buy can sometimes be found in cherry flavour, of which I am equally fond. Ryan
