I'm posting this rather common cover because it's the first letter I've personally received since the late 1950s that had "Postage Due". It arrived yesterday with .55 of postage attached and a stamped notice showing .20 owed. The last time I received a letter under these circumstances was in 1959 and the cover had a 2 Cents Postage due stamp on it and I paid the Postman 2 cents so I could take delivery of the letter (that's the way I've always known it to work). Yesterdays letter was just sitting delivered in my mailbox, I didn't have to pay the 20 cent short? I'm confused about Postage Due these days...

Perhaps your carrier didn't feel it worth his or her time/effort to try to collect the 20 cent fee and may have opted to pay it (assuming, of course, that the post office had expected to receive the funds from the carrier at end of shift).

I'd say it was incoming mail, and nicely cancelled at that!

This cover arrived yesterday with what I thought were Cinderella's (Harry Potter) turns out they're postage. Modern GB stamps and their denominations (1st ) elude me. It's more reassuring for me to work with pre-decimal stamps, I understand them. They seem less complicated than the modern issues.
Just the thoughts and biases of an old guy caught in the time warp of stamps you had to lick....
Rob
Hi Rob These GB Stamps are like your US Forever stamps , and cover whatever the current postage rate demanded by Royal Mail happens to be . We have two grades of delivery . 1st class which aims for next day within the UK , and cheaper 2nd Class which is slower, up to 3days as standard, though if not under pressure Royal Mail often manages next day for 2nd class also. Currently 1st is 85pence and 2nd is 66pence for a standard letter. You can also find 1st LARGE and 2nd LARGE for items over 100g or more than A5 size currently worth £1.29 and 96p We also at one time had E rate stamps which covered postage to Europe for a standard letter. but though these are no longer issued. they currently are rated at £1.70. Buying older accumulations and collections means stamps bought when 1st class cost about 26p in 1997, means 300% profit today. In this case your 3 x1st class equates to £2.55 an international letter between 20 and 100g

These stamps adorned the mailer containing my latest APS Stamp Store purchases--two lots containing U.S. and Great Britain Cinderellas. Got an exceptional deal on a lot containing five of the six All Hallows Rebuilding Fund stamps in blocks of 4 (will post later on the Cindy board). For awareness, APS members and non-members alike can make purchases from the Stamp Store.

Steve, A huge shout out to everyone about the APS Store. I joined the APS last month (actually it will take about 90 days before I'm a confirmed member, the FBI will be interrogating people back to my kindergarten days.... (LOL)).
I've made several purchases from the APS store since joining. If you haven't shopped there before you would be amazed! The stamps are shipped in large, stiff mailers and festooned with lots of commemoratives every shipment but what really stands out is how fast the items arrive even in these USPS scary times. So far 4 days was the fastest and 7 days the slowest (OMG).
Rob Happy to hear positive stuff about the APS stamp store and the fact you do not need membership but it is advantageous if you do regular transactions - did look at the on-line store a few min ago. Was APS member for some time but could not get in the stamp circuit (as a Canadian) Very nice org. Will go back for the store !! René

Thanks for the APS link. Very interesting. Always when I want to check prices I'am searching one of my special collecting areas. So I searched for DDR officials. And ... I found some. For sure thats not the main competence of APS, nevertheless they offer stamps and I saw an offer and wondered about the price. So I had a deeper look. One has to know that the 20 Pfennig mint (Michel # 7) has a higher value (Michel Germany Special 2016 EUR 180,00), And this offer shows a block of 4. The 10, 40 and 70 Pfennig have low values. So the price seems to be plausible. Unfortunately there was a reprint of the 20 Pfennig stamp (Michel # 7N) and I will show the difference: Look at the " S" I marked in the picture. The 10, 40 and 70 Pfennig have a "Serif", the 20 Pfennig has no Serif (I hope this is the correct English word). If the 20 Pfennig would have a serif, too, it would be Michel # 7 and the price would be ok. But it is Michel # 7N with a Michel value of 20 Euro. And by the way the colour is different too, another indicator for Michel # 7N. Maybe someone is in contact with APS and can give a hint that they can check by themselfes. cara

cara , I've alerted APS to the problem that you describe and will let you know the outcome if/when they respond. For your awareness, the identifications, item descriptions, etc., are all provided by the sellers with APS simply being the intermediary. Buyers are able to request expertization of questionable items and, should the item prove genuine, will pay the expertizing fee. If the item is not as described, the buyer's costs will be refunded and the seller must pay the expertizing fee.

I have quite often seen mis-identified items in the APS Stamp Store. I've let them know, and the item is then rather quickly removed. Not sure if they re-submit it on checking it over, or contact the seller. But why are some items so wrong in their description? I suppose some people are just too rushed to get the items ID'd, that they miss some.
I have seen quite a few, but haven't bothered reporting them. It takes away from the perusing of the stamps available for purchase!

Received this morning. An example of the use of the postman/sorting office hand stamp that I had mentioned elsewhere. Introduced to eradicate the need for pen cancels. Maybe my postman reads this forum

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

The efforts put into mailing a cover I bought for 1.56 puts my shipping jobs to shame. Over kill for sure but A for effort. The sad part is why he would not have left the new Bluenose souvenir sheet in one piece.

Hi JeffS, Deutsche Post AG changed the colour of postmarks in February 2021 (there were some Briefzentren starting end of January 2021). As far as I know was the reason the DMC-code on the new edited German stamps. With a black postmark this DMC code is not readable. cara

cara - thank you for the information. The blue ink is quite attractive. And the cover is a gem because of a single stamp franking, clear postmark and hand addressed instead of those dang computer-printed address labels. I really don't collect these, but I put them aside just cause they're nice. Thanks again.
