Digitally cropped image
These steel die machine cancels have been disappearing over the years, being replaced by ink jet or spray-on cancels. Another stamp board had a thread devoted to this subject,
new reports of steel die cancels still in use.
If you get one in your ordinary mail please post an image of it. No postmarks prior to 2020 please.
The one you post just might be the last example to be found!

Today's steel die machine postmark:
So, some thoughts about the messy cancel. Impression from a seldom used machine? General over-inking, back is quite messy.

Apart from large size mailers, I don't get much in the way of stamped envelopes. But I'll keep an eye out and post any machine cancels that show up.

Nothing newer than 2020 please.
Interesting thread, Jeff! Just trying to understand what you are looking for here. "Nothing newer than 2020"? Are you saying nothing older than or prior to 2020, then? As we are in 2020, it's not possible to have anything newer, is it? Sorry, before attempting to post anything, just want to get the sense of the theme correctly. Thanks!

Beryllium Guy (and everyone elsse) - I'm having a good laugh at my expense, for sure, so everyone feel welcome to join in. Yes I had meant not before 2020. I don't know what I was thinking but it apparently made perfect sense at the time!

You should have the ability to edit the initial post to read "Nothing postmarked prior to 2020, please"

smauggie - I wonder if your example was the result of a double strike since the envelope appears to be quite long or if it is a special setup for processing flats? Any idea?

Hi Jeff,
I don't think so. They were placed on a large 8x10 envelope. I think the operator just ran it through twice in different positions to get the stamps killed.

I'd say the messy cancels are just a general lack of cleaning! It's a shame they are disappearing these days.
The office in town has a rectangular canceller, but it is an over-inked mess for the most part. René (renden) received one last week with it, if I am not mistaken. But it looks like it is rubber or some such thing. I doubt it is metal. Besides, even if it gets cancelled here in Brighton, when it arrives in Toronto it automatically gets the spray-on cancel. That's even with a notice to handle with care attached by elastic to the envelope.

Another steel postmark, this from my backyard so to speak, Austin Texas.
On an oversize card mailed at first class letter rate. Note the doubling of the lines in the dater, the wavy lines and to an extent the lettering in the dial, except...
except for the day date and month which appear fresh and crisp.
I believe the double line phenomenon is due to ink buid-up on the edges of the raised metal.

In today's mail:
NORTH TX PDC DALLAS TX 751 27 APR 2021
I'm seeing a pattern here, these machines being used for bundles of identical first class items, this a stamp bourse announcement card.

In today's mail:
Steel machine cancel from BOISE IDAHO on a thick single-weight envelope.
Note the date, August 30 2021, the first day of postal operation of the new 57-cent first class rate. The rate was effective on the 29th, a Sunday.

I received this invitation to attend a coin show in Wichita Falls, TX today and noted its steel machine cancel of 25 March, 2022. This cancel is the same as Jeff's of a year ago, Apr 30, 2021, from the North Texas Postal Distribution Center, Dallas. The dial looks well used or not very clean, or both. The time posted looks almost hand written, but I believe it is a 1 with a blob at the bottom causing it to look like a handwritten 6. Certainly a well-used canceling slug.

The card was mailed in Texas. It was one of several announcing the coin bourse in Wichita Falls. I live north of the Red River in Norman, OK and have attended the coin show back when stamp dealers were also part of the show.
It looks like your speculation about that canceling machine being used for event mail-outs is correct.

JeffS - is the Keller item a postcard? I notice that many postcards still arrive with steel machine cancels in certain parts of the country.

philatelia Yes, it is an oversize card requiring first class mail postage. If you have 2020 and later steel postmark examples of no interest, I would like the opportunity... Yes it seems these machines are used for processing bulk quantities of card-like mail as well as the occasional onesey and twosie.

renden - yes, she decided to grow a little crop of cheese-heads when the weather gets colder! Actually she is into seed harvesting and saving nearly as I am into stamps. She has drawers of envelopes full of seeds.

She has drawers of envelopes full of seeds. Susan is at par with Denise, my wife - birds-critters (except nuisance)-flowers-tomatoes and other edible products !! GARDENINg during our short Summers.......... Very interesting and probably less boring than stamps Take care - in 1988 I was recruited to work in St Angelo (SW Texas) and after 3 days of visiting, I said NO !! - my work in CANADA/Family - I could not leave ! LIFE.....and never regretted that decision except the nice trips to TEXAS, and Steaks and the warm people I met (in 1988) ! René

Just like in Canada, Vesey's Seeds in Prince Edward Island is king as far as seeds go up here! Not very many places have seeds like Vesey's!
Where else can you get seeds for cucmelons?
