I'm coming back to stamp collecting after 60 years. Everything has changed. There are now many more countries, and many more stamps. When I was collecting in the '50s and '60's it was much less difficult to save one country's stamps. Now it seems that many countries produce stamps for any excuse (even GB). So my problem is, what should I collect - what seems reasonable - in financial and potential terms?

to TSF bushk2! Yes, most countries produce far too many unnecessary stamps these days. What you decide to collect is a highly personal issue. If you are going to collect modern issues, my advice would be to find a country or countries where the new issues are really appealing to you. Otherwise, you may decide to only collect stamps up to a certain year. Some people only collect the classic issues up to 1940, and others may collect up to a significant year in their lives, such as the year that they were born. Major political changes, such as the fall of the Soviet Union, can also be taken into account when determining a cutoff date. Although I prefer older issues, with the exception of Great Britain, my cutoff year is 2000. Even so, I only collect the British issues that I personally find appealing after the yesr 2000. Whatever you decide to collect, make sure that you enjoy yourself. After all, that’s what it’s all about!

Welcome to TSF bushk2 ! Indeed, the world of philately has changed considerably over the years, but I think for the most it part, it is for the better! Myself, I had a similar conundrum when entering the third phase, aka retirement, and picking up youthful passions to fill in the extra hours. Although I continue to build on series that I collected earlier, I have expanded to include others based on image appeal, available material and budget. My approach has been to set aside aside a certain amount of monies at the beginning for a particular series, e.g. US Transportation coils, Portuguese Ceres issues, etc. and have at it ;-) With the attitude, let me see what I can build knowing that my budget and my selections need to ensure at minimum, a basic, if not comprehensive, collection. Exploring TSF and other websites should give you a good idea of what is currently available, what might appeal visually and is possible given a particular budget. I believe that, along with careful selection and given current market values, an individual can great a wonderful personal collection of stamps based on country, image, or even era! There are many possibilities and I have read some great collecting ideas shared here by the membership... I look forward seeing and hearing about how you will proceed with your collecting interests now that you are back ;-) Again welcome and happy collecting!!

Welcome, bushk2 ! Your status has been adjusted so you may now post elsewhere. I recommend a quick review of the FAQ board to get a sense of Forum "how to's." Should you have questions or run into any problems, please send me a message and I'll try to help.

Welcome to TSF, bushk2! Good to have you on board. I am also in the UK, down in Oxford. I am a US expat who got a job here last October, and I have been really enjoying my time here. I started collecting in the 1960s when I was young, and have decided to continue with worldwide (WW), but limit myself by time period (up to 1930). Even so, I find myself keeping stamps that I like that after that period. In any case, welcome again and enjoy your time with us! -Chris (aka Beryllium Guy)

Welcome! I am also a recent returnee to stamping. While I collect a wide variety, I've mostly concentrated on places that I have spent time (these include the US, Costa Rica, and Australia), and topics that I find interesting (birds, dragonflies, coffee).
The beauty is you can collect whatever you like within any budget you decide to establish.

When I started collecting, sixteen years ago, I bought mostly mint from a couple countries. Now my collecting is mostly city cancels. And not many of those; just a few places that are especially meaningful. Most everyone here is more omnivorous. For me, the boundaries help keep expenses under control. But even for just a few places—two medium sized cities and a couple villages—there’s tons of the stuff.
I'm still working; time is a booger. When the Great Quarantine started I thought I’d have more spare time. Fooled me; working exclusively on-line turns out to be laborious, slow, tedious beyond belief. Zoom meetings work surprisingly well, but the setting up, organizing, preparing, recording; good gawd. I'm hungry to get back to normal; get things done for a change.

Thanks for all your welcomes and advice. I'll take a few weeks to decide what to concentrate upon on. Before the virus struck, I bought a lot of albums and stock books at auctions, which I hope will give me some ideas. I'll let you know of my progress (if any).

After considering all the options, I think that I will concentrate on the countries that made up Yugoslavia after the First World War - on the basis that these countries stopped issuing stamps with the formation of Yugoslavia. Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Slovenia, and Montenegro ceased to exist as separate countries issuing stamps till the 1990s.

Decisions were made, plans put into place, way to go bushk2 ! Sounds like a great collecting area and not being familiar with some of the issuing entities, I had a look and there is plenty therer to keep one busy with some beautiful stamps :-) I am curious though, you say "after considering all the options" what else do you consider and what was the criteria? If you care to share the thought process I and perhaps others, would be eager to know. If you are willing, perhaps you would even consider sharing it here in this thread - Collecting Criteria & What to Collect?
No pressure though and look forward to updates as to how your are getting on...
Happy collecting!

Well, I considered all the options - collecting by country, theme, topic, etc., but concluded that these were too large and inexhaustible; new stamps come out all the time if I chose an alternative. At the very least, the predecessors of Yugoslavia stopped issuing stamps about 1920 when the new country was formed. It should be possible to collect all the issues of one country till then (which I don't expect to do). So this was my reasoning.

bushk2, That’s a fascinating area to study both philatelically (is that a word?) and historically. My husband’s family lived in what is now Serbia near the Hungarian border. However, his father, grandfather and great grandfather were all born in the same bed in the same room, but they were all born in different countries because the borders kept shifting along with the politics! i don’t collect those countries, but I do collect the Austro-Hungarian issues some of which I believe were valid postage in that “bedroom” and town for a while.

Welcome Bushk2 from friendly Catalonia. I've been twice to Scotland and Edinburgh. Once, in 1983 I stayed for 3 week in Cramond and another time (2001) also starting in Edinburgh, but touring the Highlands. I went up to the isle of Skye. Wonderful country, city and people! As for your choice, remember that just Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovina (under Austro-hungarian occupation) were issuing stamps. Croatia and Slovenia, were Hungarian or Austrian provinces and did not have stamps of their own. I,also, know a little the area, having toured Slovenia two years ago.
