Some more foreign arrivals EDINBURGH on Iceland mail  and also on Mauritius  I guess quite a lot of NEW HEBRIDES mail was landed in Australia  |

Lovely examples of foreign cancellations vikingeck and thegubman . I have a few myself, but I am away from my collection right now so cannot make any images. However I have a few images available for stamps used in PO's abroad. Not the same as arrival cancellations, but related to this thread anyway.  Stamp of France - Sage issue - used in French PO in Beyrouth (Lebanon). At the time present-day Lebanon was still part of Ottoman Empire. |

Along the same lines....1947 airmail stamp from French West Africa with postmarks from Ivory Coast and Senegal.French West Africa was made up of 8 colonies.  |

A stamp from Nigeria with cancellation from Victoria, Cameroon 9 May 1955. I recently posted a stamp from French Guinea with a Victoria cancellation...am trying to find out if it is the same Victoria. Interesting one. Even more interesting is that it's from the short time period of the UK administration of that region, so use of Nigerian stock is not entirely surprising. Victoria is a seaport in the South-Western province of Cameroon. I went briefly through there in the early 80's. I only remember lush greenery and a fancy hotel we stayed at. |

A couple os Swedish stamps with Danish cancels. First one is "Fra Sverige" (From Sweden), and is, as I understand it, from Helsingør Second one is the familiar concentric circles of Copenhagen   |

That's a really nice cover, Graham ( thegubman ), thanks for posting! Just out of curiosity, any thoughts about how GB stamps ended up being used on a cover posted from Western Australia in 1911? I know that the first issues of Australia did not start until 1913, but Western Australia had its own stamps at that time. Do you know if it was considered acceptable for GB stamps to be used throughout the Australian States or the Commonwealth back then? Sorry if these are simplistic questions, but I am not so familiar with postal history and interested to gain a better understanding.  |

On the back of the cover you see P. O which is the shipping/liner company, so probably posted at Fremantle port. But why the use of GB stamps and not WA? If a passenger on a British ship from uk to Australia wrote a letter on board before arrival he would use his own stamps , or get GB stamps from the purser who would have a bag of mail to offload at Fremantle . Sometimes the port would have a PAQUEBOT or SHIP LETTER cancel . Sometimes the clerk would have mislaid it and just cancelled with the regular date stamp. But as it was probably a bundle of mail off a ship the GB stamps would have been accepted OK .
that might explain why the stamps are in an unusual position to draw attention to the clerk as maritime Mail .
Australia at that time used the same £ as GB .
I recall an occasion when a number of my stamp collecting acquaintances arrived off the Faroese Ferry in Aberdeen on a Sunday and one guy was deputed to get Aberdeen PAQUEBOT cancels on Faroes covers. On the Monday no one in the GPO could find the Ship Letter handstamp as it was so seldom used. We left the mail with a flustered clerk who eventually found it and cancelled on the Tuesday. Highly irregular no doubt as it would now go through automatic sorting and not get a cancel at all 🤷🏼

Another couple of Spanish stamps arriving at English ports  and two from French colonies arriving by ship at as yet unidentified foreign port. the stamps cancelled PAQUEBOT and the arrival date stamp (on the cover) has been lost  |

RMSP AtlantisOriginally built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast in 1913 and named Andes for the Pacific Steam Navigation Company but transferred to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (RMSP) before the launch. Refitted in 1929 as a luxury cruiser and renamed Atlantis. After financial trouble at RMSP, she became part of Royal Mail Lines as the SS Atlantis in 1932 (and was finally broken up in 1952). Hence the difference in designation but this card and cover are from the same ship but from 1930 and 1936 respectively. The card, top in each scan, is marked 'POSTED ON THE HIGH SEAS' and dated 26 August 1930 and has received a continuous Helsinki cancellation dated 27 VIII 30. The envelope, also marked 'POSTED ON THE HIGH SEAS' and dated 26 JUN 1936 has a London 'PAQUEBOT POSTED AT SEA' cancellation for the 3rd July 1936. Both with British stamps since both companies were British. According to TPO & Seapost 'In 1892 the Universal Postal Union (UPU) decided at a meeting in Switzerland that all ships were their own sovereign territory while on the high seas, and outside territorial waters, and that a passenger could write a letter, add a stamp of the country the ship was registered in, and put the letter in the ship's mailbox. From there the letter was taken to the nearest post office in the next port of call by a member of crew or the purser.' It would appear that Paquebot cancellations were not always used. Here are 2 more Paquebot examples. They were both sent to the same address and are clearly philatelic. In the top example, the two very attractive United States in Space, A Decade of Achievement stamps are cancelled with a Paquebot South Devon (UK) postmark. There are no other markings but it must have been posted on a US registered ship. The second cover has a rectangular PAQUEBOT marking, a Holland America Centennial 1873-1973 Bournemouth oval cancel and a SS Veendam Ocean Post Holland America Cruises marking. The US stamp, for Oliver Wendell Holmes, indicates that it must have been a US registered ship and the stamp has been additionally cancelled with a British Bournemouth -Poole wavy line cancellation. Another interesting Paquebot example. The SS Orcades was originally an Orient Line ship but was part of (British) P&O from 1966 until it was broken up in 1973. It was active in the UK-Australia New Zealand route. This cover would not have been posted on the high seas since it doesn't bear British stamps. Rather, it must have been written in Niue territorial waters, stamped with these Bradbury Wilkinson Niue overprints (plate A1) and then posted at Yokohama Port in Japan where it has received a postmark for 18th November 1968. Sooo... I picked up a collection the other week at auction, and ran across this in it last night:  Now, I don't know if this is for real (I just don't know enough of Canadian or Brit postmarks), but I'm thinking that at least one of these stamps has a "Foreign Postmark"! ;-) Andy |

Thanks daniel (and WERT)! You've validated the postmark, and being able to see that the postmark breaks at the edge of the stamp-on-stamp part, I'm calling that evidence that the postmark was legitimately stamped after the Machin was added, and call this a real (if strange) thing. Now, ummm... do I put it in my Canada album, or UK?  Thanks again, Andy |
