I wanted to start a thread to discuss and review the many Marianne definitive series' that have been issued, starting immediately post-liberation to the present day. One that I found tonight I had set aside several years ago when I first started putting my French stamps on to Steiner pages. It is Scott 600 issued as part of the series of Marianne stamps that were first issued in 1945. This is part of a later group issued from 1948 to 1949 and Scott identifies it as 10fr, bright violet. What I was struck by was the color range I have here. The right-most stamp I had put on my stock page with a question mark as it was so decidedly different from any of the other 10fr stamps but even though it is more of a pink color, the 10fr bright violet was the only stamp in the catalogue that came close to being correct. There are other 10fr stamps in the series including a red orange stamp and an ultramarine stamp issued in 1945 and 1946 respectively, but this stamp is not even close to either of those colors. Thoughts? Have I identified it correctly? Does the Yvert catalogue include this color shade or variety? I personally do not have an Yvert catalogue. Also, look at how the left-most stamp is almost lavender and it looks as if Marianne has a beard covering the right side of her face.

Interesting tread. Yesterday I decided to start sort all the French stamps I have in envelopes laying around. I roughly sorted them in motives but have not done any fin-sorting, except from the Gallic cock and latest 1960-61 Marianne standing in a boat. (Lot of print displacement on those two ordinaries motives. There is a pile of the Marianne series that you show above darkormex, so if there is some time tonight I will start looking at it. I might have access to a Yvert catalogue pdf, not sure.

Traditionally MARIANNE embodies the French Republic . She wears the PHRYGIAN CAP representing Freedom. Some definitives are not Marianne, but here is a representative selection. It has also been the custom recently to change the depiction of Marianne with each new president. [

tobben63, this particular set of Mariannes is one of my favorites but I also like some of the newer issues from the 60s, 70s and 80s that are noted on vikingeck's page above.

That sun-baked one you noted looks similar to my variation. Also, when you look at the Colnect listing for this stamp it also shows a stamp that is similar to this almost pink color rather than the bright violet which seems to be the more consistent color.

Yveet & Teller, Spink | Maury 20 refers to it as reddish violet18 and Maury, Ceres & Dallay , Yvert 811 only lists the one color lilac
SG describes it as Reddish-Violet

Here is another to ponder. I would love to share more information or images of these if any of you have them. This is the same Marianne design, later issue, Scott 653. I have several non-Marianne definitives that have advertising in the selvedge like this one. I know that this type of advertising was common to definitives issued in booklets by France. I have several of these set aside on a separate Vario page in my collection. I liked this one especially because I had not realized Bic pens were being produced as early as the 1940s and I was surprised to see the logo was still so similar to the present day. I believe, unfortunately, that the full selvedge is cut-off at the top on this stamp rather than being the selvedge edge of the pane. Still, I set it aside as it was an interesting addition to my collection.

There was a re-issue as a self-adhesive booklet of all the post-war definitive designs to see all of them together:

found a few more,,,, lots of other denominations. There is also a list variant which lacks the F after the denomination. Must not be too uncommon as catalogue value is not all that much, but I do not have one color fairly consistent far left has more 'rust', then there's the more pale (3 and to a lesser degree 5), and various depths of "shading' on neck, cheeks, etc

But I am sure you do not have Xavier's booklet hrdoktorx , Princess !!........it is the booklet I want ! René philatelia Who is she ?? Marianne has been the national personification of the French Republic since the French Revolution, as a personification of liberty, equality, fraternity and reason, and a portrayal of the Goddess of Liberty. Marianne is displayed in many places in France and holds a place of honour in town halls and law courts. She is depicted in the Triumph of the Republic, a bronze sculpture overlooking the Place de la Nation in Paris, and is represented with another Parisian statue in the Place de la République. Her profile stands out on the official government logo of the country, is engraved on French euro coins, and appears on French postage stamps. It was also featured on the former franc currency. Marianne is one of the most prominent symbols of the French Republic, and is officially used on most government documents. Marianne is a significant republican symbol; her French monarchist equivalent is often Joan of Arc. As a national icon Marianne represents opposition to monarchy and the championship of freedom and democracy (excerpts from Wikipedia)

Another item I set aside is this 5f stamp from the 1951 re-issue in new colors. The color is described as dull violet in the Scott Catalogue. In this case I have an unidentified perfin, a small c. Any other Marianne perfins lurking about in your collections?

Well, who knew the Marianne booklet would provoke such interest. So, since people like her, Marianne also shows her various incarnations in another gummed block, issued a few years later, as one can see by the rate increase, but in black and white:

Then, I can also show two of the "Colors of Marianne" blocks to complement those already posted: including the latest of the series, showing the design chosen by Emmanuel Macron, "Marianne l'engagée" (meaning dedicated to her causes, not engaged to be married, nice false friend word that "engagé").
